Here is the weekly review of the top performing Australian players, who play currently abroad.


Aron Baynes

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Aron Baynes (208-86, college: Washington St., currently plays in Adriatic League), who plays in Slovenia. Baynes could not help Un.Olimpija (8-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Un.Olimpija was defeated 70-56 at home by the second-ranked Zvezda. Baynes recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks and 4 steals. It's Baynes' first season with the team. Baynes is currently sixth on the league's list of best rebounders and also on the list of best blockers (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 12.4ppg, 6.8rpg, 2FGP: 57.1%(76-133) and FT: 63.8%. Baynes has a dual citizenship: Australian and New Zealand. He is currently a member of the Australian senior national team.

Nathan Jawai

   #2. Second place goes to former international power forward Nathan Jawai (208-86, college: Midland CC, currently plays in Spain). Jawai contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Lagun Aro GBC (2-14) crushing them 98-50 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. He recorded 9 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in 17 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (9-7) is placed eighth in the ACB. This year Jawai averages: 6.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 2FGP: 69.0%(40-58) and FT: 55.6% in the 15 games he played so far. He played for the Australian national team in 2009.

   #3. The Australian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman Brad Newley (199-85, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Spain). Newley led G.Canaria 2014 to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked FIATC Joventut (7-9) crushing them 80-50 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. He scored 12 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Herbalife Gran Canaria 2014 (12-4) is placed fourth in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Newley has relatively good stats this season: 12.6ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.8apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 60.9%(67-110), 3FGP: 28.0% and FT: 64.1%. He is also a member of the Australian senior national team.

   #4. Center Andrew James Ogilvy (211-88, college: Vanderbilt, currently plays in Euroleague) was not able to help Brose Baskets Bamberg (0-2) in their game against Real Madrid (2-0) in the Euroleague. Despite his very good performance on Thursday night Ogilvy scored 15 points and blocked 3 shots. Ogilvy's overall stats this season are: 6.0ppg and 2.0rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Australian and Irish. Ogilvy used to play for the Australian national team back in 2011.

   #5. International center Aleks Maric (211-84, college: Nebraska, currently plays in VTB United League) was not able to secure a victory for Lokomotiv (6-4) in their game against Zalgiris (9-1) in the VTB United League, despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game. He recorded 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 35 minutes. But the fourth-placed Lokomotiv lost 81-89 on the road to the leading Zalgiris in the group B of VTB United League. Maric is currently first on the list of best rebounders with 10.2rpg. He also averaged so far 11.7ppg and 1.3spg in the 10 games. Maric plays currently for the Australian national team.

   #6. Guard Matthew Dellavedova (193-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the St.Mary's, CA (1-0) in their game against the Yale University (9-1) in the NCAA. Despite his very good performance last Sunday He scored 24 points and added 6 passes. Dellavedova is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in St.Mary's, CA's roster. This season Dellavedova has relatively solid stats: 11.7ppg and 1.3spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Australian National Team roster.

   #7. International small forward Joe Ingles (203-87, agency: Priority Sports, currently plays in Euroleague) is a teammate of previously mentioned Nathan Jawai. But that was another game of his team in Euroleague which we would like to mention. Ingles couldn't help Regal FC Barcelona (1-1) in their game against Khimky (2-0). He scored 8 points in 30 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (#4) lost 65-78 in Khimki to the leading Khimky in the group F of Euroleague. This year Ingles' overall stats are: 7.0ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.6apg in the 11 games. He is also Australian national team player.

   #8. Center David Andersen (212-80, currently plays in Euroleague) couldn't help Fenerbahce Ulker (0-2) in their game against Montepaschi Siena (2-0) in the Euroleague. Andersen scored 8 points. Fenerbahce Ulker (#6) was defeated 98-92 in Siena by the second-ranked Montepaschi in the group F of Euroleague. Andersen's total stats this season are: 6.8ppg and 3.9rpg. He plays currently for the Australian national team.

Former international point guard Patrick Mills (183-88, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the San Antonio Spurs (27-9) in their game against the New York Knicks (23-10) in the NBA. Mills recorded 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The San Antonio Spurs were badly defeated 100-83 in New York by the Knicks. This season Mills averages only 5.3ppg. He used to play for the Australian national team four years ago.

   #10. Forward Mitchell Young (206-90, currently studies in the States) is a teammate of previously mentioned Matthew Dellavedova. However that was another game of his team in NCAA which brought him to that list. Young couldn't help the St.Mary's, CA (1-0) in their game against the Harvard University (23-10), despite his very good performance in Monday night's game. He scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 23 minutes. But the St.Mary's, CA was edged 70-69 in Cambridge, MA by the Harvard University. Young has been at the team for four years. This season Young averages only 5.3ppg in the 31 games. He is a former U19 international player as four years ago he still played for the Australian national team.

   #11. International forward Ryan Broekhoff (201-90, is currently at the American university) couldn't help the Valparaiso in their game against the Loyola University of Chicago in the NCAA. Despite his very good performance last Wednesday Broekhoff scored 15 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 4 assists. This season he averages only 5.3ppg. Broekhoff plays currently for the Australian national team.

   #12. Former international swingman Anthony Drmic (198-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Boise St. to an easy victory against the Walla Walla College crushing them 106-39 in the NCAA on Saturday night. He scored 22 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. This year Drmic averages only 5.3ppg in the 31 games. He used to play for the Australian national team back in 2011.

   #13. Former international forward Jeromie Hill (203-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the UTSA in their game against the San Jose State University in the NCAA. Despite his very good performance in Monday night's game Hill scored 22 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists. This season he averages only 5.3ppg. Hill used to play for the Australian national team four years ago.

   #14. Former international center Julian Khazzouh (209-86, currently plays in Lebanon) led Sagesse to a victory against the sixth-ranked Al Moutahed 91-84 in the Lebanese Division A last Sunday. He scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 25 minutes. Khazzouh is currently fifth on the list of best blockers with 2.0bpg. This year he also averages: 11.3ppg, 8.3rpg and 1.8apg in the six games. Khazzouh used to play for the Australian national team back in 2009.

   #15. Former international point guard Jorden Page (185-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) is a teammate of previously mentioned Matthew Dellavedova and both played together in the last NCAA game. Page couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams St.Mary's, CA in their game against the Yale University, despite his good performance on Sunday night. He scored 10 points in 26 minutes. But his team was badly defeated by 16 points 78-62. This year Page's total stats are: 6.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 3.4apg in the 16 games. He used to play for the Australian national team four years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Australian passport but never been selected to any of Australian national teams:

   #1. Kyrie Irving (191-G-92, college: Duke, currently plays in NBA) led Cleveland Cavaliers to a 2-point victory over the Charlotte Bobcats (9-24) 106-104 in the NBA in Friday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Irving scored 33 points (!!!), grabbed 5 rebounds, passed 6 assists and added 3 blocks (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) in 38 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. The Cleveland Cavaliers have not so impressive 8-27 record this season. Irving is currently sixth on the league's list of top scorers with 23.4ppg. He also averaged so far 4.0rpg, 5.6apg and 1.5spg in the 24 games he played so far. Irving is a naturalized American. Despite his Australian passport, Irving previously played for the USA U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Australian team. Strangely he has never played in Australia.

   #2. Damon Heuir (188-PG, currently plays college basketball in the States) led S.Utah to a victory against the Northern Arizona University (2-2) 90-77 in the NCAA last Saturday. Heuir scored 30 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds in 35 minutes. The Southern Utah University has 3-0 conference record this season. So far his team won all three games in the conference. Heuir is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in S.Utah's roster. This season he has relatively solid stats: 12.6ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.8apg and 1.3spg in the 16 games.

   #3. Mathiang Muo (196-F, currently studies in the States) contributed to a Charleston So.'s victory against the Radford University (0-1) 81-74 in the NCAA last Saturday. Muo had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting the same number of rebounds in 31 minutes. The Charleston Southern University has 1-0 conference record this season. This year Muo's total stats are: 6.8ppg and 3.9rpg in the 12 games. He has a dual citizenship: Australian and Sudanese.

   #4. Chris Patton (208-F-91, college: S.Idaho JC, is currently at the American university) helped Cal-Riverside edge the Cal State - Northridge (0-2) 65-64 in the NCAA on Thursday night. He scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The University of California, Riverside has 1-2 conference record this season. Patton has reliable stats this year: 11.3ppg, 8.3rpg and 1.8apg.

   #5. Joel Naburgs (193-G-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Stetson (1-2) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Stetson lost 64-70 on the road to the Mercer University. Naburgs scored 18 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 34 minutes. Naburgs plays fourth season for the team. He has reliable stats this year: 11.3ppg, 8.3rpg and 1.8apg in the six games.

   #6. Triantafillos Tzakopoulos (187-G-85, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German ProA (second division) was not able to help Duesseldorf Baskets (10-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Tzakopoulos' very good performance Duesseldorf Baskets was badly defeated 99-79 in Vechta by the second-ranked SC Rasta. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Tzakopoulos' total stats this season are: 6.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 3.4apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Greek and Australian.

   #7. Venky Jois (201-F-93, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the E.Washington (1-3) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Jois' very good performance the E.Washington was defeated 81-66 in Missoula, MT by the University of Montana. He scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Jois has averaged so far 6.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 3.4apg.

   #8. Adrien Sturt (209-C-86, college: Snow CC, currently plays in United Kingdom), who plays in the British BBL couldn't help London Lions (7-11) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his very good performance London Lions was crushed 96-73 in Guildford by the higher-ranked Surrey Heat (#3). Sturt was the second best scorer with 18 points. He also added 5 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Sturt is currently third on the list of best blockers. This season he has very good stats: 15.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.3bpg and 1.1spg.

   #9. Luke Devlin (203-F-91, college: Albany, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Albany win their game against the Brown University 57-50 in the NCAA in Monday night's game. Devlin scored 15 points (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). He has reliable stats this season: 15.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.3bpg and 1.1spg.

   #10. Peter Hooley (193-G-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) is a teammate of previously mentioned Luke Devlin. But that was another game of his team in NCAA which we would like to mention. Hooley helped Albany win their game against the University of Maryland -Baltimore County 65-48. He scored 8 points and added 5 assists (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line). Hooley has reliable stats this season: 15.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.3bpg and 1.1spg.

AZS Koszalin (TBL) agreed terms with 25-year old American swingman Kenny Manigault (196-91, college: Pikeville). He played this summer at Goldfields Giants in Australian SBL. In 26 games he had very impressive stats: 22.6ppg, 9.2rpg, 5.7apg and 3.2spg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was named to Australian SBL All-Star Game.
