The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans continue to stack their roster, signing two-time NBL Champion Jarrod Kenny (188-G-85) to their new-look squad on a two-year deal. The Tall Black has spent the last three years with the Perth Wildcats, winning back-to-back Championships (2016, 2017) while establishing himself as a prominent point guard in the NBL. Kenny comes to Cairns after playing in career-best form last season, with an impressive improvement in all statistical areas following Round 14. This January, he improved his scoring average to almost six points per game, and his three-point percentage spiked by almost 30 per cent. The 32-year old recorded season-highs in scoring (12) assists (five) and rebounds (four) entering 2018, as well as a career-high four triples against the Kings. CQUniversity Cairns Taipans Head Coach Mike Kelly said he's always had an eye on Kenny, and was eager to sign him as soon as he became available. 'I've been told that if I want to have a team that plays hard - then you need to recruit players that play hard,' said Kelly. 'Throughout my time in the NBL, I've always admired the way Jarrod plays. 'He's a tough player that plays hard all the time, and always tries to make the best plays for his teammates.' Recently, Kenny helped the Tall Blacks to the Bronze Medal at the Commonwealth Games (alongside Taipan Rob Loe) and has represented New Zealand on the international stage since he was a junior. Coach Kelly said that the experienced 6'2' guard is in his prime, and will relish the role he gets on the new team. 'One of the things that makes Jarrod so important for us is his ability to run the offence, but also remain focused and relentless on defence,' he said. 'I know his team mates are going to love playing with him, and he's going to love the responsibility and freedom he will get at the Taipans.' Jarrod Kenny is the sixth player to join the Taipans squad, alongside Nate Jawai, Rob Loe, Alex Loughton, Lucas Walker and Kuany Kuany. Courtesy of: taipans.com
