NEWCASTLE Hunters are the Waratah Basketball League women's champions for the first time after rallying late to edge out Illawarra Hawks 55-50 in a thrilling grand final at Terrigal on Sunday. The Hunters trailed by seven points early in the fourth quarter but dug deep to reel in the Hawks and avenge their only loss of the season - a 76-69 defeat in Wollongong on July 17. The women's team were the only Newcastle side involved on grand final day after the Hunters men suffered a 64-59 loss to Sydney Comets in their semi-final on Saturday, and Wagga Blaze defeated Newcastle 70-59 in the Division One women's semi-final. 'The way they've played during the year, whenever they've had a little bit of adversity, they've tried to dig in and fight it out, and that's what they did tonight,' Hunters coach Mark Gledson said. 'Newcastle have been around for so long and been in the competition for so long, and taken so long to get here, which makes it even sweeter to finally win it. 'You look around today and see the number of junior girls here, and the families that have been involved in the game, so something like this can only be good for Newcastle basketball now and for the future.' Hunters guard Susannah Walmsley, who added five steals, four rebounds and four assists to her game-high 19 points, was judged grand final MVP in a game in which points were at a premium. Susannah Walmsley was well supported by Alison Ebzery, who had 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and contained Garlepp to 16 points, and captain Sophie Kleeman (175-G-90, college: Troy) (10 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals). Kleeman said the Hunters were guilty of 'a few brain explosions' in the third quarter but she called them together and stressed the need to keep calm. 'It's such an amazing feeling to win a championship with this group of players,'' Kleeman said. 'Everyone played their role today and everyone has stepped up and contributed all season, so this is great for Newcastle Basketball, and great for all the juniors we have coming through the system.' Newcastle qualified for the grand final by defeating Sutherland 72-57 in the semi-final on Saturday.
