Louella Tomlinson selected the top Australian playing abroad in last week's games - May 1, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Australians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former University international forward Louella Tomlinson (193-88, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in Hungary). She led Miskolc to a victory over the closely-ranked ZTE NKK (9-11) 82-66 in the Hungarian A Division in Sunday night's game. Tomlinson was MVP of the game. She scored 25 points, had 8 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 3 blocks in 36 minutes on the court. Aluinvent DVTK Miskolc (13-7) is placed sixth in the A Division. This year Tomlinson averages: 9.7ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.2apg, 2.1bpg, 2FGP: 57.5%(96-167), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 74.1% in 27 games she played so far. She has a dual citizenship: British and Australian. Former West Coast Waves Perth starter played for the Australian university national team six years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international point guard Natalie Hurst (164-83, currently plays in Turkey). Hurst could not help Hatay (14-12) in their last game on Monday. Despite her very good performance Hatay was defeated 87-81 at home by the lower-ranked Galatasaray (#6). Hurst was the second best scorer with 16 points. She also added 6 rebounds and dished 6 assists. It's Hurst's first season with the team. Hurst has relatively good stats this year: 11.9ppg, 4.2rpg, 4.3apg, 2FGP: 39.7%, 3FGP: 39.8% and FT: 82.9%. Former Gladstone Port City Power starter played for the Australian national team in 2014.

Abby Bishop

   #3. The Australian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Abby Bishop (189-88, currently plays in France). She was the major contributor in Tarbes' victory against the second-ranked Lyon (3-3) crushing them 90-47 in the French LFB on Wednesday night. Bishop had a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 11 rebounds (made all of her five free throws) in 30 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Play-Out. Tarbes Gespe Bigorre (4-2) is placed third. Bishop has individually a very good year with high stats. She averages: 19.8ppg, 10.0rpg, 1.6apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 46.4%, 3FGP: 37.3% and FT: 82.8% in 21 games. Ex-Canberra Capitals player is also a member of the Australian senior national team.

Katie-Rae Ebzery

   #4. Small forward Katie-Rae Ebzery (177-90, currently plays in Russia) was not able to help Dynamo Moscow (9-11) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Ebzery's very good performance Dynamo Moscow was defeated 77-70 on the road by the higher-ranked Nadezhda Orenburg (#3). She was the top scorer with 20 points. Ebzery also added 4 rebounds. Ebzery's overall stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 3.2rpg, 3.0apg and 1.3spg. She is also Australian national team player.

   #5. International center Cayla George (192-89, currently plays in Hungary) contributed to an easy victory against the league leader Atomeromu (13-18) 61-45 in the Hungarian A Division last Tuesday. George recorded 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 33 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. UNIQA Sopron (16-4) is placed second in the A Division. This year George has relatively solid stats: 11.9ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.5apg and 1.1spg in 24 games. She plays currently for the Australian national team.

   #6. Center Alexandra Bunton (198-93, currently plays in Russia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Katie-Rae Ebzery. But that was another game of her team in Russian PBL which we would like to mention. Bunton was not able to secure a victory for Dynamo Moscow (9-11) in their last game on Monday. Despite her good performance Dynamo Moscow was crushed 99-51 in Orenburg by the higher-ranked Nadezhda (#3). Bunton was the second best scorer with 10 points. She also added 8 rebounds. Bunton's overall stats this season are: 7.6ppg and 6.7rpg. She is a former U22 international player as she played for the Australian team two years ago.

   #7. Former international swingman Alice Kunek (187-91, currently plays in France) contributed to Lyon's victory against the fourth-ranked Nice (4-2) 49-44 in the French LFB in Saturday night's game. Kunek scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Union Lyon Basket Feminin (3-3) is placed second in Play-Out group. This year Kunek's overall stats are: 6.4ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.7apg in nine games. She used to play for the Australian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Australian passport but never been selected to any of Australian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Rebecca Thoresen (178-F/G-78, currently plays in Germany) managed to help TSV 1880 Wasserburg to win against the closely-ranked Gruner Stern Keltern (18-4) 68-65 in the German DBBL last Sunday. Thoresen scored only 3 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. TSV 1880 Wasserburg (20-2) is placed first in the DBBL. It was her team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. Thoresen has been at the team for nine years. This season she averages just 2.1ppg. Thoresen has a dual citizenship: Maltese and Australian.

   #2. Amy Browne (178-G/F-90, currently plays in United Kingdom) could not help Mystics (21-5) in their last game. Despite her very good performance Mystics lost 75-90 on the road to the lower-ranked (#5) Hatters. Browne was the second best scorer with 16 points. She also added 6 rebounds in 38 minutes. Browne has reliable stats this year: 14.8ppg, 5.7rpg and 2.4apg in 16 games she played so far.

Perth Redbacks (SBL) signed American guard Makailah Dyer (175). She just graduated from N.Dakota (NCAA). Dyer has played there for the last four years. In 29 games she had very impressive stats: 15.7ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.6apg and 1.2spg last season. Great year as she was named to All-Big Sky Conference 1st Team.
