Everything could happen in Runcorn at the game between two tied teams. Both leader Brisbane Spartans and bottom-ranked South West Metro Pirates had identical 0-0 record. But South West Metro Pirates were not able to use a home court advantage and were defeated by the opponent from Brisbane 92-86 on Saturday night. Brisbane Spartans outrebounded South West Metro Pirates 43-21 including a 30-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Forward Josh Derksen (206-95, college: KWC) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points and 9 rebounds. Ben Hastings contributed with 13 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Jakobe Hunter answered with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and the former international point guard Kai Woodfall (183, college: MBU) added 20 points and 7 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) in the effort for South West Metro Pirates. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Brisbane Spartans (1-0) left bottom position moving up to fifth place in League. Loser South West Metro Pirates still closes the standings with one game lost. Brisbane Spartans' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Brisbane to the arena Brisbane Capitals.
