There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Cairns Taipans (3-4) won against 8th ranked Bullets (4-7) in Brisbane 102-94 on Saturday. Cairns Taipans outrebounded Bullets 40-27 including 25 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American guard Tahjere McCall (193-94, college: Tennessee St.) notched 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals to lead the effort and South Sudanese forward Majok Deng (205-93, college: ULM) supported him with 26 points (made all of his eight free throws). Even 22 points and 6 rebounds by American forward Robert Franks (203-96, college: WSU) did not help to save the game for Bullets. His fellow American import swingman Lamar Patterson (196-91, college: Pittsburgh) added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Five Cairns Taipans and four Bullets players scored in double figures. Bullets' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Cairns Taipans moved-up to ninth place. Bullets lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with seven games lost. Cairns Taipans will meet higher ranked Illawarra Hawks (#4) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Bullets will play against Illawarra Hawks (#4) in Gwynneville and hope to secure a win.
