MIGHTY Mights look set to scoop the Raiwaqa Basketball tournament this weekend. Unbeaten after two games, the Saula Koroi-coached side look sharp and will be up against the likes of Warriors, Veterans and Mighty Sharks. The AU Graphics sponsored tournament serves as a trial for the Raiwaqa players as they gear up for the Fiji Games in Lautoka next weekend. Raiwaqa Baketball Association official Nicholas Wong said the intensity of the game grew with each game as players tried to impress the selectors for a spot at the Fiji Games. 'Players are giving their best to impress the selectors. The excitement is there and it is really interesting watching players giving their utmost best,' he said. 'So far the team to beat is Mighty Mights. 'They play good basketball and with a good coach I believe they should be out to reach a good placing. 'Warriors and Veterans are also favourites in the tournament.' In the women's section, Wed C, led by US-based Valerie Nainima, are in top form. They beat the national U20 team last week. Fiji White U20 national team remains unbeaten and should provide stiff competition to Wed C. Wong said the pool games would continue until Friday night before the elimination rounds begin on Saturday afternoon. Tonight, Fiji White takes on Knights in the women while Veterans plays Mighty Jazz and Mighty Sharks battles the Warriors. Courtesy of: fijitimes.com

Mark Seccombe (180-G) is in Fiji as an Australian Youth Ambassador for the development of basketball athletes. 'We are happy to have Mark with us here sharing his experiences and bringing all sorts of helpful ideas,' said Basketball Fiji development officer, Fanny Simpson. Seccombe, who is from Sydney, has a bachelor's degree in sports science, had successfully applied to be a youth ambassador and is in Fiji for a year. Seccombe has participated in many Australian-wide tournaments and played briefly in the USA and Canada while on tour. He also competed in the Raiwaqa Revival tournament, playing for the USP team, which ended two weeks ago and also helped out with the Raiwai Youth program. He aims to take basketball to the grassroot level and has succeeded by signing in eight primary schools for next year's season as part of his development program. Veiuto, Stellar Marist, Yat San, John Wesley, Gospel, Latter Day Saints, International and Delainamasi are the eight contending primary schools. They have also managed to recruit seven interested primary schools from the West. 'Next year will be a very busy year for us,' Simpson said. This is also the first time Basketball Fiji is taking basketball programs to the primary level, says Simpson. Courtesy of: fijitimes.com
