National men's basketball coach Marica Mudunavonu has devised a plan to tackle the elusive Pacific Games Gold medal, and high on the agenda is fitness.

The former national basketball and hockey rep is concentrating her team's training on getting fit as well getting the endurance first.

"We will have court time but first its fitness and endurance."

"From now until December most of our training will be concentrated on the two main areas," Mudunavonu said.

The national basketball coach last week named her 24-member training squad to prepare for next year's Pacific Games in Samoa.

She has put together a side with a mixture of new and the experienced.

"Yes, what I want to do is blend the experienced players and the younger ones and find a combination for Samoa next year.

"Attendance to training has been satisfactory.

"From next week we will be slowly introducing the boys weights program," she said.

"Right now we have been training on the tracks."

Mudunavonu said she expected to trim her side down by February next year with the final 12 to be chosen by April.

"The first cut is in February and we will be trimming the 24-member squad down to 18.

"In the second cut we should choose the final 12 for the Pacific Games," the dual international said. At last weekend's national trials, selectors named four U20 team members in the training squad.

The national U20 side is preparing for the Oceania U20 basketball championship to be held in Auckland, New Zealand next month.

Notable experienced players in the national squad are Baravi Thaman, Adrian Bosley and Saki Rokodi.

The side continues with fitness and endurance training until next Saturday where they will have their first court time a weekend ago.

Mudunavonu confirmed that she will not be taking absentee to training lightly.
