Nelson Giants won NBL 2007
 NBL season awards
American import Josh Pace (198-G/F-83, agency: Interperformances, college: Syracuse) was named the NBL regular season MVP. Nelson Giants guard was selected to All-Star Five last year, but this season he was better, much better. His average stats marked 22.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. A quick guard with an impressive ability to penetrate and deliver inside was a big problem for all defences throughout the league this year. Pace worked hard on his shooting and became a bigger threat from behind the arc this season. Now he has one more thing to conquer this season as his Nelson Giants take on the Bay Hawks in the Final. Josh Pace averaged 28.5 points, 8.5 boards and 5.0 assists against the Bay Hawks in two winning efforts this season.
Another awards were given out as well. The Rookie of the Year title went to Charlie Piho (194-F-85) of the Auckland Stars. Harbour Heat's John Dorge was named the Best Coach. Veteran Link Abrams (198-F-73) became Kiwi MVP adding this award to his best rebounder title. He shared Kiwi MVP award with Paora Winitana (195-G-76) from the Bay Hawks.
Lindsay Tait (193-G-82), who played a terrific season with the Auckland Stars was given the Best Kiwi Guard award. Finally the All-Star Five comprised Josh Pace, Lindsay Tait, Link Abrams, Oscar Forman (205-G-82) and Dillon Boucher (196-G-75).

Nelson Giants are new NBL champions!
Nelson Giants - Bay Hawks 96:83
Nelson Giants had no curses flying over the home court today as they completed the NBL Final series in Game 2 at the Trafalgar Centre. The Giants dominated the game right from the start taking control of the scoreline in the opening frame 25:23. Clifton Bush picked up 3 fouls early in the game and had to be substituted. Michael Fitchett knocked down 4 out of 8 three-point attempts to spur Nelson. The hosts built a comfprtable lead at halftime 52:44. Paora Winitana (195-G-76) tried to fight back in the third frame but with little use. Nelson continued to deliver easy baskets and the Bay Hawks suffered from inaccuracy. The home side entered the final frame leading 72:63. Jamil Terrell (203-F/C-80, college: W.Texas A&M) then converted a pair of long jumpers to put the Bay Hawks on the brink of loss with 78:65 midway through the fourth quarter. Veteran Ed Book (210-C-70, college: Canisius) later hit a three-pointer of his own to set the crowd celebrating the title.
Josh Pace (198-G/F-83, agency: Interperformances, college: Syracuse) was a usual contributor for Nelson as he topscored with 25 points. Mike Vukona secured 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamil Terrell and Ed Book nailed 14 points apiece. Paora Winitana replied with 24 points for the Bay Hawks. Everard Bartlett had 20 points and Kareem Johnson (205-C-80, college: Cincinnati) notched 15 as the Bay Hawks had to surrender their champions title. This game was the last one for Ed Book, who decided to retire from basketball after the season.
Nelson: Josh Pace 25, Mika Vukona (197-F-82) 19, Mike Fitchett (183-G-82) 16, Jamil Terrell 14, Ed Book 14
Bay Hawks: Paora Winitana 24, Everard Bartlett 20, Kareem Johnson 15, Arthur Trousdell 13.

 2006 NBL AWARDS ANNOUNCED
Outstanding Guard (Keith Carr Trophy) & Outstanding Kiwi Guard (John Macdonald Trophy) & Most Valuable Player
Paora Winitana (190-G-76)  (Easy LPG Bay Hawks)
With Tall Black point guard Paul Henare taking up a contract in Turkey, Winitana undertook the Hawks captaincy, and simply led by example and with passion. The newly ordained bishop carried the Hawks to a 14-4 regular season record, averaging 15.6 points (49.5% FG, 70.4% FT, 39.3% 3pt), 4.3 rebounds, a career-high 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals. While none of the Hawks dominated statistically, they thrived on team performance with Winitana as the glue that held them together.

Outstanding Forward (Commissioner's Cup) & Outstanding Kiwi Forward (Stan Hill Trophy) & Kiwi MVP
Casey Frank (205-F-77, college: N.Arizona) (GI Juice Auckland Stars)
Like Winitana, Frank was required to step up in the absence of another leading performer, namely reigning 2005 MVP Lindsay Tait (193-G-82). After winning a share of the Outstanding Forward title last year, Frank gained NZ citizenship and became eligible for the Kiwi awards as well. Over the final month of the regular season, he became the focal point of the Stars' bid for a championship three-peat and responded with 16.1 points (53.5% FG, 77.3% FT, 30.6% 3pt), 8.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.9 steals and 2.0 blocks. He led the league in blocks and his FT%, assist, steal and block stats were all career highs.

Coach of the Year
Nenad Vucinic (NBS Nelson Giants)
This has been a record-breaking year for the Tall Black assistant coach, who became the most successful coach in NBL history. His 148 wins surpasses the previous record held by national team colleague Tab Baldwin, but at 42, Vucinic is poised to take that mark well beyond anyone's reach for a long time. He guided Nelson to a 14-4 record, losing second spot on the table only on a countback ... and his fifth Coach of the Year title further extends his lead over Baldwin (three) in this department.

Rookie of the Year
Shaun Tilby (185-G-81) (Otago Nuggets)
On a team that finished at the foot of the NBL table, Tilby have plenty of opportunities to excel and produced several noteworthy performances to make the Nuggets competitive. He averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals, and scored in double figures five times, including 19 points and seven assists in a 3OT loss to Inspire Net Manawatu Jets.

All-Star Five
Casey Frank (205-F-77, college: N.Arizona) (GI Juice Auckland Stars)
Nick Horvath (208-F-81, college: Duke) (St Laurence Wellington Saints)
Called in to replace Anthony "Go Get It" Jones, Horvath sure got it done for Saints, giving them a dominating inside presence that had been sorely lacking previously. He averaged 19.7 points (53.6% FG, 62.0% FT), 9.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, and produced the season's only "20-20" with 21 points/20 rebounds against Waikato Pistons.
Josh Pace (198-G/F-83, agency: Interperformances, college: Syracuse) (NBS Nelson Giants)
A former team-mate of NBA star Carmelo Anthony with the NCAA champion University of Syracuse, Pace got better as the season progressed and flaunted with a triple double on several occasions, highlighted by his 24 points/10 assists/eight rebounds against Inspire Net Manawatu Jets. He averaged 19.1 points (51.4% FG, 66.7% FT, 25.0% 3pt), 6.6 rebounds,3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals.
Lindsay Tait (193-G-82) (GI Juice Auckland Stars)
Before being sidelined with a broken wrist, Tait seemed headed towards another MVP year, averaging 21.6 points (51.8% FG, 80.2% FT, 40.3% 3pt), 3.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals. He was the leading Kiwi scorer in the league, was one of only two players averaging 50% FG/80% FT/40% 3pt and was enjoying a career-best season in scoring and rebounds.

 Stars Crowned Champions - Jul 10, 2005
After an exhausting season filled with suprises, the Auckland Stars showed their winning class to go record back to back championships after an intense final at the Pettigrew Green Arena. The competition's best road team, stole the soap opera eventually after a series of late game mishaps.
Lindsay Tait seemed to have put the Stars in good position, three points up with 33.4 seconds left. However after an exchange of free throws between teams, Dusty Rychart who had hit a clutch trey two weeks ago, launched, missing but Paora Winitana tipping it in. Controversially, the clock was allowed to run out with the Stars beginning to celebrate their victory but with Hawks protesting their should be time left to play and a scuffle broke out at halfway.
With ordered restored and time back on the clock, the Hawks fouled Lindsay Tait before the ball could be inbounded. Tait missed both freethrows - the second deliberately. The rebound was then batted to halfway, where Paora added one more piece of drama to the game, hitting a turn around, fade away hook shot - which was disallowed as it was half a second too late!
Dillon Boucher (196-G-75) led the Stars from the front, earning the Finals MVP title after his amazing defensive work ethic and persistence on offence. Boucher now has a record eight national league titles.
"It's an individual milestone, but it has been a team effort to get me where I am. Every team I've ever won with has been a great team with great players." said Boucher.
Australian big man Derek Moore was the spark for the home team, with his monster-like blocking and rebounding abilities but also with his soft touch and guile on the perimeter. Moore led all scorers with 22 points.
