Soana Lucet (185-C-87) was outstanding with 20pts 11rbs against Guam, New Caledonia won the game 58-45 and is now firmly ranked on the 3th spot. The men will face Micronesia in the quarterfinals, we also got Gerard Girier-Dufournier's feelings after the pool phase.
Women: New Caledonia - Guam: 58-45
That was the best game for the caledonian team so far in this tournament against Guam, a potential medal contender. Soana Lucet (185-C-87) showed why she was voted a FIBA Oceania All-Star in 2004, she posted 20pts 8/16FG 11rbs 4bs and 4st in only 22min! Not bad for a 18-year old girl. Yolande Luepack, Marie-Rose Ofatuku and Christelle Vautrin scored 6pts each.
Papua New Guinea 4-0
New Caledonia 3-2
Solomon Islands 1-3
Gerard Girier-Dufournier is a solid back-up in the New Caledonia team, he's only averaging 2.3pts 33.3%FG 1.3rbs and 0.7st in 14min per game but he brings a lot to his side with his defence and good spirit. New Caledonia is the only undefeated team remaining in the men tournament. Here are his thoughts after the pool phase:
"We've been here for a week now and everything is going fine for us. We won our three games and we claimed the first spot in our pool. The first days were pretty hard because we didn't get our luggages, we had to wait two days to finally get them. The tournament is going fine so far and I hope we will continue on this way. The hardest game was against Fiji, we won only by two and the game was very physical. We will now head to the quarterfinals. Since we landed in Palau the rain never stops, this is hard for the outdoor competitions there."
Men Quarterfinals schedule:
New Caledonia - Micronesia
Guam - Marshall Islands
Fiji - Solomon Islands
Palau - Papua New Guinea
The women will now have two days off, they will play again on Monday against the home-team Palau for their last pool game. The men will play against the Federated States of Micronesia in quarterfinals.
