Wellington Saints defend NBL title - Jul 17, 2011

Wellington Saints - Bay Hawks 106:97

The Wellington Saints have repeated as NBL champions. They overcame the Bay Hawks at the TSB Bank Arena tonight to clinch fifth NBL title in franchise history. Lindsay Tait (194-G-82, agency: Impact Basketball) unloaded 28 points, issued 6 assists and grabbed 5 boards to lead the winners.
The Saints jumped to a 20:12 lead midway through the opening quarter. But Ben Hill and Aidan Daly drained three-pointers late in the first period as the Bay Hawks levelled things up at 24. Josh Pace (198-G-83, college: Syracuse) and Galen Young (201-F/G-75, college: Charlotte) put the Bay Hawks in charge early in the second frame. The Saints responded with 12:0 run to regain the lead. Wellington stepped on the gas and rallied to a 53:41 lead at halftime. Wellington did not allow their opponents closer than 8 points in the third term. Moreover the Saints boosted the gap to 15 points with one quarter remaining 79:64. The gap grew at 16-point mark midway through the final period and though the Bay Hawks cut it to 8 points in the dying seconds the Saints raced to the triumph at the end. Corey Webster (185-G-88, college: Lambuth) nailed 22 points, while Leon Henry (200-G/F-85, college: S.Idaho JC) added 19 points for the winners. Galen Young answered with 20 points and 7 rebounds for the Bay Hawks. Josh Pace contributed 17 points in defeat.
