Harbour Heat opened their 2010 NBL season with a 99-82 victory over a spirited Otago Nuggets team at the NSEC on Saturday evening.
The Nuggets included Riki Buckrell in their starting five, one of four NZ 2009 U19 World Champs team members to make their NBL debuts in the game. Tom Rowe was accompanying Buckrell in the Nuggets line up while Sam King and Morgan Nathan were in the Heat team. Buckrell and his colleagues were given a wake up call in the first quarter as the Heat on the back of 7 from 7 shooting including 4 threes from point guard Corey Webster (185-G-88, college: Lambuth) charged to a 34-17 advantage at the first break.
Heat coach Judd Flavell rested some of his starters to open the second period and the Nuggets realising their opportunity seized the initiative going on an unanswered double digit run to close within two points mid way through the term. Antoine Tisby led the way with 11 points in the quarter and fellow American Tyler Amaya contributed 9 as the blue and golds roared back into contention trailing by just 5 points, 43-48 at half time. For the home team the Breakers contingent were to the fore, Webster had 20 points, Rick Rickert 12 points and Dillon Boucher 6 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
The Heat opened the third quarter in the same vein as the first, pressuring the ball carrier forcing a number of turnovers and capitalising on the visitors mistakes. Boucher and BJ Anthony were in the thick of the action but Anthony was forced back to the bench after collecting his fourth personal foul. Matters got worse for the Heat when Daryl Cartwright was pinged for his fourth foul followed by a game ending technical foul to gift Otago points from the charity stripe and a feeling an upset might be on the cards 70-62 to the Heat at three quarter time.
A couple of long range threes from Tyler Ross and Amaya gave the home fans some anxious moments early in the final period but the experience of Boucher, Webster, Rickert and Reece Cassidy carried the Heat to a solid win as they eased away in the last five minutes. The Heat had nine scorers in the final period, the Nuggets just four emphasising the difference in depth between the Heat, expecting to be semi finalists and the Nuggets striving for credibility. Webster led all scorers with 34 points, Rickert had a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds and Boucher came close to a triple double recording 12 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists.
Final Score; Harbour Heat 99 (Corey Webster (185-G-88, college: Lambuth) 34, Rick Rickert 18, BJ Anthony 13, Dillon Boucher 12) Otago Nuggets 82 (Antoine Tisby 32, Tyler Amaya 25, James Ross 10).
