Auckland Dream gained early season bragging rights over Harbour Breeze with a 55-48 victory in the first Ross Williams Cup game held at Epsom Girls Grammar School on Friday night.
Ross Williams, a Basketball New Zealand Life Member, gave over 50 years service to basketball, and the women's game in Auckland was particularly dear to his heart. If he had been able to attend the encounter on Friday Ross would have enjoyed the occasion, as two evenly matched teams went toe to toe in front of a good crowd.
Shauna Povey and Paddy Pupuke-Robati shared all of Auckland's first quarter points but the Breeze shaded the period 13-11 as Tabitha Jenkins scored just prior to the break.
The second quarter was all the Dream. Povey moved into double figures as the hosts won the frame 13-6, to take a 24-19 lead into the locker room at the interval.
Jazz Kailahi-Fulu made a couple of inside baskets for the Breeze but triples from Stevee-Rose Theyers and Leiani Tautiepa pushed the Dream advantage into double figures. A late third period flourish from former Westlake teammates Mareta Davidson and Keeley Tini dragged the Breeze to within three at the last break - down 38-35.
Luye Murphy scored five quick points to start the fourth, but Tini and Kailahi-Fulu kept the Breeze in touch and when Morgan Ili scored inside it was a two-point game (48-46) with three minutes to play.
Sharne Pupuke-Robati (180-F-01) and Kailahi-Fulu exchanged baskets but although the Breeze had opportunities to level it was the Dream that finished the stronger closing out a seven point win.
The two teams will lock horns again in a couple of weeks when they play the opening game of the 2018 Women's Basketball Championship (WBC) in Tauranga on May 4th.
In the curtain raiser St Mary's College, Ponsonby defeated Orewa College 80-32. The win means St Mary's replace Orewa in the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Grade for the 2018 season.
Auckland Dream 55 - Povey 14, P Pupuke-Robati 12, S Pupuke-Robati 9, L Murphy 5 Harbour Breeze 48 - J Kailahi-Fulu 14, M Ili 9, T Jenkins 7, K Tini 7, M Davidson 6

New Zealand's Tall Ferns enjoyed the fact they weren't playing Australia, and walked away with a Commonwealth Games bronze medal to show for their final outing at this tournament. After being pummelled 109-50 a night earlier by the awesome Australians in their semifinal, the New Zealanders found Canada a much more agreeable opponent in the playoff for the bronze medal at the Gold Coast to run out comfortable 74-58 victors. It was a bit of a something old, something new theme to the Ferns' performance too, with 16-year-old schoolgirl phenomenon Charlisse Leger-Walker (174-G-01) and everegreen 35-year-old shooting guard Natalie Taylor (182-F-84, college: SE Missouri St.) leading the way for the Kiwis with 18 points apiece. Leger-Walker, who is still at St Peter's School in Cambridge, got hot late to sink four three-pointers in the final term to put the issue beyond doubt after the Canadians had clawed the deficit back to 10 points. She was seven of 12 from the floor and four of seven from deep and added two boards, two assist and a pair of steals in another impressive performance. Taylor rounded off an excellent Games in style, making six of her 13 attempts from beyond the arc (and not even taking a shot inside) and adding five boards and a pair of assists. Micaela Cocks (174-G-86, college: Oregon) also stuffed the stat sheet for the Ferns, making seven of 14 shots for 16 points and adding six rebounds and seven assists. Antonia Farnworth-Edmondson (181-G-87) chipped in with nine points and five boards for the New Zealanders, while Kalani Purcell (188-F-95, college: BYU) led the rebounding count with seven. Neither side shot well through the first half, but it was the Ferns who converted slightly more efficiently to lead 16-12 after the first quarter and 34-26 at halftime. The New Zealand advantage stretched to 18 (57-39) by the end of the third quarter, and from there the bronze was only ever going one way. The Ferns shot an acceptable 40 percent from the floor, and hustled their opponents into a 34 percent shooting clip and 24 turnovers. They also made 15 three-pointers, to just seven by the Canadians.
