Here is the weekly review of the top performing New Zealand players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, agency: Duran International, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Australia). Penney was the major contributor in a New Zealand Breakers' victory against the second-ranked Illawarra Hawks (12-11) 95-86 in the Australian NBL last Friday. He recorded 23 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. New Zealand Breakers (11-12) are placed sixth in the NBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Penney's first season with the team. Penney has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 3.2rpg, 2.6apg, 2FGP: 40.7%, 3FGP: 42.6% and FT: 78.7%. Penney played for the New Zealand senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international guard Tai Jack Webster (193-95, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA. He could not help the Nebraska (3-2) in their last game. Despite Webster's very good performance the Nebraska lost 85-91 at home to the University of Michigan. He scored 28 points (!!!), had 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 37 minutes. Webster is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Nebraska's roster. Webster has very impressive stats this season: 18.3ppg, 5.0rpg, 4.0apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 52.7%, 3FGP: 33.8% and FT: 71.6% in 18 games he played so far. Ex-Advice First Waikato Pistons player is in the roster of the New Zealand senior national team.

   #3. The New Zealand player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward Isaac Fotu (203-93, college: Hawaii, currently plays in Spain). Fotu contributed to an overtime CAI Zaragoza's victory against the league outsider La ICL Manresa (2-14) 87-77 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Sunday. He scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 30 minutes. CAI Zaragoza (6-10) is placed 12th in the Liga Endesa. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Fotu has relatively good stats this year: 10.9ppg, 6.5rpg, 2FGP: 67.6%(73-108), 3FGP: 5.9% and FT: 61.0% in 16 games. He has a dual citizenship: Tongan and New Zealand. Fotu is also a member of the New Zealand senior national team.

   #4. Center Alex Pledger (215-87, college: Belm.Abbey, currently plays in Australia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kirk Penney and both played together in the last Australian NBL game. Pledger led New Zealand Breakers to a victory against the second-ranked Illawarra Hawks (12-11) 95-86. He recorded 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Pledger's overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.3bpg. He used to play for the New Zealand national team back in 2014.

Former international power forward Steven Adams (213-93, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an Oklahoma City Thunder's victory against the Sacramento Kings (16-25) 122-118 in the NBA in Sunday night's game. Adams scored 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. The Oklahoma City Thunder has 25-19 record this season. Adams has been at the team for four years. He has very impressive stats this year: 12.0ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.1apg and 1.2spg in 42 games. Adams used to play for the New Zealand national team six years ago.

   #6. Forward Robert Loe (211-91, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Australia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kirk Penney. But that was another game of his team in Australian NBL which we would like to mention. Loe contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Kings (11-12) 92-74. He scored 9 points and added 5 assists. New Zealand Breakers (11-12) are placed sixth in the NBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Loe's overall stats this season are: 7.5ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.5apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior New Zealand National Team roster.

   #7. International guard Shea Ili (184-92, currently plays in Australia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kirk Penney. He played also in the last Australian NBL game facing Alex Pledger (above) in the other team. Ili contributed to a New Zealand Breakers' victory against the second-ranked Illawarra Hawks (12-11) 95-86. He recorded 7 points and added 3 passes in 20 minutes. This year Ili's overall stats are: 4.3ppg, 1.8rpg and 1.7apg in 12 games. He is also New Zealand national team player.

   #8. Guard Jayden Bezzant (188, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Northwest Nazarene University win their game against the St.Martin's University (4-5) 82-69 in the NCAA2 in Thursday night's game. Bezzant scored 16 points, grabbed 4 boards, dished 4 assists and stole 3 balls. The Northwest Nazarene University has 4-4 record this season. Bezzant's total stats this year are: 7.5ppg, 1.8rpg, 3.1apg and 1.5spg. He used to play for the New Zealand U19 national team back in 2015.

   #9. Former international forward Finn Delany (198-95, college: SW Baptist, currently plays in Australia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kirk Penney. However that was another game of his team in Australian NBL which brought him to that list. Delany helped New Zealand Breakers edge the league outsider Bullets (9-14) 84-82. He scored 8 points in 18 minutes. New Zealand Breakers (11-12) are placed sixth in the NBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Delany's total stats are: 2.5ppg and 1.8rpg in 19 games. He used to play for the New Zealand national team three years ago.

   #10. Center Mika Vukona (197-82, currently plays in Australia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kirk Penney. He played also in the last Australian NBL game facing Shea Ili (above) in the other team. Vukona managed to help New Zealand Breakers in a victory against the second-ranked Illawarra Hawks (12-11) 95-86. He recorded only 4 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. Vukona has averaged so far 6.4ppg, 5.3rpg and 2.4apg in 23 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior New Zealand National Team roster.

   #11. Former international guard Jarrod Kenny (188-85, currently plays in Australia) was not able to help Perth Wildcats in their game against Adelaide 36ers in the Australian NBL. Kenny scored only 4 points. His team were defeated 95-84. Kenny has averaged so far 4.9ppg, 2.3rpg and 2.4apg. He used to play for the New Zealand national team two years ago.

   #12. Former international swingman Reuben Te Rangi (198-94, currently plays in Australia) was not able to secure a victory for Bullets in their game against Illawarra Hawks in the Australian NBL. Te Rangi scored 6 points. His team were defeated 85-80. Te Rangi has averaged so far 2.7ppg and 1.4rpg. He used to play for the New Zealand national team back in 2015.

   #13. Former U19 international guard Denhym Brooke (185, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the BYU-Hawaii (2-7) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance the BYU-Hawaii was edged 93-90 on the road by the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Brooke recorded 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. This season Brooke has relatively solid stats: 10.2ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.3bpg. He used to play for the New Zealand U19 national team five years ago.

   #14. International center Mike Karena (208-93, college: Wright St., currently plays in Spain) led Sammic ISB to a victory over one of league's weakest teams CB Tarragona 2017 crushing them 90-68 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) in Sunday night's game. Karena was MVP of the game. He scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 27 minutes. Karena has reliable stats this year: 12.3ppg, 6.3rpg and 2.0apg in 17 games. He plays currently for the New Zealand national team.

   #15. Former U18 international forward Tom Vodanovich (201-94, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams JMU in their game against the College of Charleston in the NCAA. He recorded 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 26 minutes. His team was edged 53-51. Vodanovich has averaged so far 6.8ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.4apg in 19 games. He used to play for the New Zealand U18 national team five years ago.


The list of other players, who all have New Zealand passport but never been selected to any of New Zealand national teams:

   #1. Marcel Jones (203-F-85, college: Oregon St., currently plays in Slovenia) led Helios to a victory over the closely-ranked Sencur Gorenjska gradbena druzba Kranj (5-9) 79-71 in the Slovenian Liga Nova KBM in Saturday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Jones scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 25 minutes. Helios Suns Domzale (8-5) is placed sixth in the Liga Nova KBM. It's Jones' first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.2apg in five games he played so far. Jones is a naturalized American. He used to play for McDonalds Manawatu Jets in New Zealand league.

   #2. Aron Baynes (208-C-86, college: Washington St., currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Atlanta Hawks (24-18) crushing them 118-95 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. He scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The Detroit Pistons have 19-24 record this season. Baynes' overall stats this year are: 4.3ppg and 3.9rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Australian and New Zealand.

   #3. Izayah Mauriohooho-Le'afa (188-G-96, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to a Sacramento St.'s victory against the Southern Utah University (0-1) 88-83 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Mauriohooho-Le'afa recorded 16 points. The Sacramento State University has 2-3 conference record this season. Mauriohooho-Le'afa has averaged so far 4.4ppg, 2.3rpg and 1.6apg. He is a naturalized American. Strangely Mauriohooho-Le'afa has never played in New Zealand.

   #4. Yanni Wetzell (208-F, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Saint Mary's (TX) University win their game against the Oklahoma Panhandle State University (0-7) crushing them 101-48 in the NCAA2 on Thursday night. Wetzell scored 15 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a mere 15 minutes. The Saint Mary's (TX) University has 4-3 record this season. Wetzell has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.2ppg, 7.6rpg and 1.7apg in 13 games.

   #5. Nikau McCullough (188-G-97, currently plays in NCAA2) is a teammate of previously mentioned Yanni Wetzell and both played together in the last NCAA2 game. McCullough helped Saint Mary's (TX) University win their game against the Oklahoma Panhandle State University (0-7) crushing them 101-48. He scored 14 points in a mere 18 minutes. This year McCullough averages only 2.8ppg in six games.

   #6. Brandon Watkins (198-F, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Mars Hill College win their game against the Brevard College 82-68 in the NCAA2 last Wednesday. Watkins scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Watkins has averaged so far 6.1ppg and 3.5rpg.

   #7. Javaan Mumtaz (193-G, currently plays in NCAA2). Mumtaz could not help the Eastern New Mexico University to beat the Cameron University. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Mumtaz scored only 3 points in 14 minutes. His team lost 66-78 in the NCAA2. Mumtaz has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 1.6rpg in 12 games.

   #8. Jordan Hunt (206-F, currently plays in NAIA) helped Southern Oregon University win their game against the Eastern Oregon University 97-94 in the Cascade last Saturday. He scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Hunt has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 1.6rpg.

BC Boncourt Red Team (LNA) landed 25-year old American center Amir Williams (211-113kg-92, college: Ohio State). He played in the summer at Taylor Hawks in New Zealand NBL league. In 14 games he averaged 13.5ppg, 9.9rpg (#3 in the league), 1.7apg and 1.6bpg. It was a very successful season in his career as he was awarded Australiabasket.com All-New Zealand NBL Center of the Year and selected to Honorable Mention. Isaac Fotu (ex Zaragoza) signs at Ratiopharm - 8 hours ago
Ratiopharm Ulm (BBL) landed 24-year old New Zealander international forward Isaac Fotu (203-104kg-93, college: Hawaii). He has a double citizenship as he also holds Tongan passport. Fotu has played for the last two years at Tecnyconta Zaragoza in Spanish Liga Endesa. In 32 games he averaged 9.5ppg and 5.7rpg last season.
