Marcel Jones
Experienced Naturalized American Marcel Jones (203-F-85) had an amazing evening in the last round for Canterbury and that's him to receive a Usbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 1.
The 31-year old forward had a double-double of 33 points and ten rebounds, while his team beat Taylor Hawks (#7, 0-2), the league's bottom-ranked team 99-87. Canterbury maintains the 5th position in New Zealand NBL. Canterbury is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 1-1 record. In the team's last game Jones had a remarkable 58.8% from 2-point range. He just recently signed at Canterbury and just after two games he already turned to be a very valuable addition to the team. Oregon State University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Jones is in league's top in points (6th best: 27.5ppg), rebounds (6th best: 9.0rpg) and averages solid 2.5spg and 58.3% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 27-year old Dutch power forward Josh Duinker (209-F/C-89) of Wellington S.. Duinker impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Of course he led Wellington S. to another comfortable win outscoring Taylor Hawks (0-2) 107-84. His team has extremely good start of the season. They won their first game. However the season is at the beginning, so everything can happen. They still may lose their high position in the standings. Duinker is one of the most experienced players at Wellington S. and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was another Canterbury's star - American Jeremy Kendle (186-G-88). Kendle got into 30-points club by scoring 39 points in the last round. He went also for ten rebounds and five assists. Despite Kendle's great performance Canterbury lost 107-114 to SC Rangers (#1, 1-0). But his team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. The last thing Canterbury needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 1 victories and 1 lost games. Kendle has a great season in New Zealand. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 35.0ppg (best scorer) and assists with 4.5apg (8th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Mitchell McCarron (191-G-92) of SC Rangers - 28 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists
5. Lindsay Tait (190-G-82) of SC Rangers - 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Houston O'Riley (180-PG-89) of Taranaki MA - 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists
7. Grant Fiorentinos (208-F/C-92) of Taylor Hawks - 25 points and 7 rebounds
8. Alex Pledger (215-C-87) of Southland S. - 19 points and 9 rebounds
9. Everard Bartlett (193-G-86) of Taylor Hawks - 23 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists
10. Finn Delany (198-F-95) of Nelson G. - 26 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
