Papua New Guinea swept away the Marshall Islands in the first victory in the tournament. PNG took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Even though the Marshall Islands kept the game close, PNG step it up to another level in the fourth.  PNG were shooting the ball very well, especially from the three-point range.  Ben Elavo was awesome in his shooting with 26 point and 7/7 from the three-point range.  Roy Gime had 15 points and 5 rebounds, Joe Elavo had 10 points and 5 rebounds while Colin Kila had 7 points and 6 steals. 

PNG Men: Ben Elavo 26, Roy Gime 15, Joe Elavo 11, Gali Tau 10, Harold Elavo 8, Colin Kila 7, Charles Parapa 6, Leo Hicks 6, Wally Parapa 4, Lawrence Lahari 2, John Toua 1, Epeli Hau’ofa 0.

 

Papua New Guinea Women's team continued their undefeated ways, this time to host nation Palau.  The PNG team had a comfortable lead in the third however the home team tried to give themselves a fighting chance in the fourth.  For PNG Gamino Koroka top scored with 11 points while Louise Wallace had 10 points and 14-year-old 188cm tall Tiata Baldwin had 6 points and 4 rebounds. 

PNG Women: Mary Elavo 4, Ronnie Pomat 2, Margaret Ani 1, Symoena Gesa 6, Marcia Muri 5, Julie Ann Diro 1, Karo Maha 2, Martha Bonga 4, Raka Nope 1, Gamino Koroka 11, Louise Wallace 10, Tiata Baldwin 6.

 

PNG has a rest day in the men's while the women play to Solomon Islands

Papua New Guinea - New Caledonia 81-61 Papua New Guinea crowned Melanesia Cup champions as they defeated New Caledonia 81-61 in the Final game. Leahy Martineng-Lakah continued his solid play with 17 crucial points in the biggest game of the event. Earlier at the event Papua New Guinea beat Solomon Islands 79-37 and then New Caledonia 87-80. AFTER the successful introduction of the Twilight Basketball programme last year, the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea will launch its second phase tomorrow at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre.
