The Guam boys were too fast and strong for Tahiti as they won the Oceania Youth Tournament Quarterfinal 90-43. Tahiti would now play for the 5th place. Thanks to the ladies, a medal is still possible for the country. The women's Tahiti squad reached the semifinals after a convincing victory over New Caledonia but the hardest part for them is yet to come as they'd face Australia in the semis.
There wasn't any miracle for the Tahiti men's squad against Guam. Guam, who recently won the Youth Micronesian Tournament, used quite the same core of player to play in this tournament. They took a better start, leading 53-23 at half-time, and the game was already over. Tahiti shoot poorly but they managed to grabb a lot of rebounds but they lost the game because of 48 turn-overs due to Guam's full-court press. Noel Pico was the only tahitian able to score in double-figure with 15pts 7/13FG and 8rbs, Tehia Maitere cannot rule this team as usual due to foul problems, he ended with 6pts 3/8FG 7rbs in 22 minutes.
Guam played a much speeder game and it works perfectly. Estella top-scored with 22pts 9/16FG, Susuico added 20pts 8/16FG 13rbs and Willy Stinnett posted 17pts 7/20FG 8rbs. This trio combined for 59pts to 43 for the entire Tahiti team.
Now the boys would play a classification game against Papua New Guinea and then against the winner of New Caledonia-Cook Islands for the 5th place.
On the other hand, the ladies do reach the semifinals as they defeated New Caledonia 63-39. They took a great start in the first half (17-5) and then they just had to control the tempo and display a great defense (16%FG for Caledonia).
Maea Lextreyt led the team with 19pts 4/14FG 9rbs with a great help for Erena Eta Eta and Tareina Adams who both scored 15pts. Fatima Fenuafanote scored 13pts 12rbs for New Caledonia.
The upcoming semifinal against Australia should be much harder, especially on the boards (Tahiti grabbed 43rbs in this game, New Caledonia 66!). Let's remind that Australia is one of the three best team in the world in women's competition.
We would make a complete review of the games of both Tahiti's teams games when the tournament will end. You can follow the results day-to-day on our australian page.
