Moso'oi Basketball Tournament: G-Unit won the ladies tourney- January 17, 2006
G-Unit were last crowned champion women's team in the 2005 Panamex Gatorade Moso'oi International Basketball Tournament when they defeated ASPA women 58 - 51. The women's tournament final was always a very close affair between two evenly matched teams. In the boys tournament, the action continues. ASPA led at the first break 14 - 13 before G-Unit was able to open up a four point lead at the half 30 - 26. Overall it was the three point shooting of G-Unit and in particular that of Pii Te'o which made the critical difference in the end. Pii made 3/7 and the team 5/14 while ASPA failed to make any of their four shots from beyond the line. Pii's shooting opened up a comfortable five point lead for the quarter and while ASPA made a good comeback in the fourth quarter to win the quarter by five points, G-Unit were able to hold on to that seven point winning margin in the end. While Pii was the top scorer with 17 points, the outstanding player for the tournament in the women's division was Nikkie Tamapua. Nikkie scored 13 points including 2/4 from beyond the three point line and led the assists for the game with three yet only had two of the team's thirty turnovers. Her value was highlighted when she had to leave the game during the fourth period after she suffered an injury. It was during this period that ASPA were able to make their comeback. G-Unit's depth proved stronger with their bench players outscoring ASPA's bench 19 - 10. Lusi Luvu was the outstanding player for ASPA shooting 7/14 from the field, hauling in a team high six rebounds and making two steals while Frances Kelemete leant good support with eight points and six rebounds. Tagi Tiley led the game in rebounds with seven. |
