Big V State Champions WAVERLEY FALCONS - Aug 30, 2010 Series Results: GAME 1- Ringwood 91 defeated Waverley 80 GAME 2- Waverley 86 defeated Ringwood 58 GAME 3- Waverley 76 defeated Ringwood 63 SERIES MVP: Sedale Threatt (Waverley) Game Two With the Falcons staring down the barrel of a quick and ruthless 2 game sweep away from home, they came up with the goods to force a game three. The first quarter was a tough contest as Waverley did the damage at the line, drilling 13/14 from the stripe to take a 23-18 lead at the end of the first as both teams traded baskets in the up-tempo affair. From there it was all Waverley. They score with consistency and ease while Ringwood struggled to make shots while turning the ball over time and time again. The big guns stepped up on the biggest of stages for the Falcons while some of the Hawks key players failed get the job done. Simon Blennerhassett (184-G-82) was instrumental with 24 points and 5 assists while the usual suspect Ivan Platenik (201-F-83, college: Alaska-Anch.) put in 22 points and 8 boards. Not to go unmentioned, Sedale Threatt junior was incredible, tearing apart the D with a 22 point, 7 rebound and 8 assist game that ripped the heart out of Ringwood. For the Hawks, Daryl Corletto (193-G-81) was the only one to really show much kick, putting in 17 points in a lone-hand performance. Game Three The stage was set. The two most talented teams in the league, fighting it out in a deciding game three in front of a parochial crowd at Maroondah and the two squads didnt disappoint. Both teams came out white-hot, trading baskets and drilling shots from all over the hardwood but the Falcons held the slight advantage, leading by three at the end of the first. The second quarter was almost an absolute opposite from the first. Neither squad could buy a shot as defence became paramount in the period. As the teams headed into the locker rooms at the half, the Falcons were in front by just three as Minerve and Harrington rallied their troops. After returning from the long break, the premiership quarter was almost a carbon copy of the second. Neither squad could find any real rhythm offensively as they were split by only one point, in Waverleys favour. With the Falcons entering the final quarter of the State Championship season leading by 4 points, an upset was looming for the Hawks. With both teams trading the first few buckets in a tense start to the last quarter of the season, Waverley then put their foot on the Hawks neck. Threatt got busy and massacred the defence, scoring at will, getting to the line and setting up his teammates who didnt miss in the quarter when it mattered most. Weaver hit a three, Blennerhassett drilled one as well and before we knew it, the Falcons had it sealed leading 74-58 before unloading their bench in the last minute to put the icing on the cake. Series MVP was clearly the best player on the court, drilling in 21 points, 5 boards and 6 dimes in an inspirational individual performance. With support coming from the likes of Weaver with an efficient 14 points, Blennerhassett with 14 and Ivan Platenik with a 12 point and 12 rebound double double. For the Hawks, Corletto stood up again with 17 points with McMillan chiming in with 16 of his own. Waverley can now bask in the glory of a fantastic finals series knowing that they will be the champions for the entire off-season until 2011 rolls around. The Braves went down to the Geelong Supercats 95-82 in the SEABL championship game at MSAC on Saturday night. The defeat stung the east conference champions, with Harvey to use the experience as inspiration for next season. We had a lot of opportunities, but it just wasnt our night, Harvey said. Full credit to Geelong, theyre a great side. Our boys didnt give up all night and we fought it out to the end. We had a great year in winning the east conference and I know we can be even better next year. It would be great to get another crack at this game next year. The Supercats were just too polished for the Braves. Bendigo stayed in striking distance all night, but every time it looked like mounting a serious challenge the Supercats came up with a big play. In the first half it was Nathan Herbert (192-F-84) (17 points, nine rebounds) who drained some clutch shots, while in the second half, game MVP Ismail Muhammad (198-F-83, college: Georgia Tech) (21 points, six rebounds) put a dagger through the Braves hearts. Despite constant attention from Braves star Luke Meyer, Muhammad made two very tough fadeaway jump shots in the final quarter that took the stuffing out of Bendigo. Offensively, the Supercats were much more efficient. They shot the ball at 47 per cent compared to Bendigos 34. Geelong point guard Braith Cox (13 points, five assists and four rebounds) was instrumental in the win in the second half. His penetration off the dribble allowed easy points for Daniel George (12 points, 10 rebounds) and JNathan Bullock (17 points, six rebounds). While Geelong dominated in the paint (46 points to 32), Bendigos fate was decided behind the three-point line. Out of the 76 field goal attempts the Braves took for the game, 32 of them were three-pointers. They only made nine of the 32, with Chris Hogan (17 points) and Meyer (18 points) combining for eight of those nine. Guards Warren Randall and Kevin Probert had nights to forget, combining for 0-10 from behind the three-point line. In a tense opening, both sides struggled to find their shot, with Maitland only scoring four points in the opening 6 minutes. The Sea Eagles steadied first and behind some solid play from super-sub Kevin White, opened up a handy 13 point break at quarter time. Manly 24 Maitland 11 The Mustangs offensive woes continued in the second quarter, failing to score until two minutes remaining and behind by 20 plus, the game heading towards a blowout. Backed by a huge crowd following, Maitland rallied late and somehow managed to stay in the contest, only trailing by 13 at the half. Manly 33 Maitland 20 Buoyed by an incredible crowd, the Mustangs would not say die and totally shutdown the Manly offense, while finally getting their offensive game going down the other end. Led brilliantly by captain and point guard Andrew Allen, Maitland restricted Manly to other ten scoreless minutes and incredibly tied the game at 35 all on the back of a 22-0 run. Manly finally scored some key baskets late in the quarter and finished on a 13-2 run of their own to take a 11 point lead at the last break. Manly 48 Maitland 37 With Manly back in control of the contest and with their season on the line, the Mustangs had one last run in them and back to back threes by Scott McGregor and Josh Clifford they were back in this epic final. In an absolute cliffhanger some late Ben Arkell (191-G-79) free throws sealed the game for the Sea Eagles, who thoroughly deserved their victory. Despite looking the better team all night, the Sabres had to fight off a spirited Bearcats challenge in the fourth quarter. Sturt led by as much as 21 during the third quarter and still by 16 at time, but saw their lead quickly dwindle, before some clutch shooting from 19 year old Guard Tom Daly (11 fourth quarter points) saw them hang on for victory. Daly finished with a game-high 26 points, to go with 4 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. As he was a fortnight ago, Jacob Holmes (201-F-83) was again the Bearcats nemesis, finishing with a monster game of 22 points, 24 rebounds, and 10 assists, and was subsequently named the Grand Final MVP. Holmes was also involved in an ugly incident late in the third quarter with West Point Guard Anthony Spadavecchia, in which both players picked up unsportsmanlike fouls. Darren Ng had 19 points, but shot just 31% from the field whilst Corey Maynard scored 9 points on 9 shots. Chris Molitor was fantastic for West with 25 points and 11 rebounds whilst Brad Davidson had a near triple-double, finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Young gun Josh Bond (185-G-91) showed his enormous potential, coming off the bench for 17 points and providing a spark when it was most needed. However former 36er Blake Truslove struggled, finishing the game with just 4 points. It was a disappointing finish to an otherwise sensational season from the underdog Bearcats, who became the second club in as many seasons to have both their womens and mens team bail out in the Grand Final. Sturt, on the other hand, hit their stride at the right time of the season, making up for last years heartbreak. A fortnight ago when the teams last met, Sturt stunned West by scoring 18 of the games last 20 points to win by 2. In the early going, it was apparent this game was still playing on the minds of the Bearcat players as they fell behind 15-4 in the first 5 minutes. Darren Ng hit two 3-pointers in the run (one a banker to beat the shot-clock, the other a fast-break swish), whilst Holmes and Daly were also heavily involved. The younger Sabres were well on top of their generally more experienced counterparts, however the introduction of one of Westies own young guns got them back into the game. Bond had not played a lot in the Bearcats other two finals but after Chris Molitors triple, Bond hit one of his own, before dishing off to Davidson for another. West had scored 9 points in 3 possessions and the margin was back to 4. Bond hit another 3 late in the quarter, with the time score of 22-20 suggesting the spectators would be in for a magnificent game. The teams were neck and neck for the first 4 minutes of the second quarter with Sturt young guns Daly and Nathan Spehr (177-G-92), playing against his former club, trading baskets with Truslove and Molitor. Maynard then knocked down a 3-pointer giving the Sabres a 7-point lead. But once again, West found something; an 8-0 run capped off by a Davidson free throw giving them a 32-31 advantage with 3 minutes left in the half. However, the Bearcats only lead lasted a matter of 32 seconds, as Sturt finished the half on an 11-2 run to take a 42-34 lead into half-time. The Sabres began the second half the way they finished the first, dominating the boards and scoring the first 6 points of the half. Signs of frustration were evident on the faces of the West Adelaide players. A Molitor 3 was the only bright light for the Bearcats, with 3s from Centre Jan Warbout and Darren Ng helping Sturt build a 17 point advantage. Darren Ng then made his 5th and 6th free throws of the quarter before another basket from Spehr gave Sturt a 62-41 lead with 4.08 to go in the quarter. Adam Pearce knocked down a 3 for Westies on the following possession before the teams continued to trade blows throughout the remainder of the quarter. Then, late in the quarter, Holmes secured a tough rebound before passing upcourt to Darren Ng for a layup. Spadavecchia and Holmes were trailing the play and multiple clashes both during and after Ngs layup resulted in both receiving unsportsmanlike fouls. At time, the score was 69-53 in Sturts favour, but West were far from done. Westies went with a zone defence for the first time in the match and Daly missed a 3 on the opening possession. Molitor then hit a 3-pointer before knocking down another 34 seconds later. Darren Ngs missed 3 on the next possession caused a long rebound which Davidson collected, before dishing up court to Molitor who finished off with a lay-up. Within a bit over 1 mins, Molitor and the Bearcats had scored 8 points to halve the Sabres lead. Holmes free throws coming out of the timeout steadied the ship for Sturt before the Cats missed two opportunities to again claw within single figures. Dalys free throws pushed the buffer out to 12 with 6.55 to go and the margin stayed at double figures for more than 5 minutes. The margin floated between 10 and 13 points during this period; the Sabres always with the answers, despite the best efforts of Davidson. Daly, Maynard, and Warbout all scored at least once each during this patch of play, with the youngsters displaying poise right when it mattered most. However, the resilient Bearcats showed why they were the top team at the end of the regular season, reducing the deficit to 9 with 1.39 to go, following a basket from Spadavecchia. By now, West were playing a full court trap and forced numerous turnovers on their now tense opponents. 7 seconds after Spadavecchias score, Mark Bauer turned the ball over but for not the first time, the Cats were unable to make the most of their extra opportunity, with Spadavecchia failing to connect. Spadavecchia then dived after the ball again, but picked up his fifth foul in process. Holmes connected on 1/2 foul shots, which made it a 4 possession ball game with 1.28 remaining. Holmes missed on the next possession, giving the Bearcats a vague glimmer of hope. Kurtis Phillips (198-G/F-90) then threw up a rushed 3-pointer that was well off the money, but 2 missed free throws from Bauer kept the game somewhat alive. Davidson then missed a 3, before 2 Daly free throws pushed the lead back out to 12. After a Sturt time out, a Holmes turnover was pounced on by Bond, who knocked down his third 3. However, two free throws from Daly and then another two from Bauer ensured the Sabres would hold on for a 91-82 victory. Courtesy of: https://www.sportingpulse.com |
