The past few weeks have been incredibly exciting for Australian basketball, with the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) opening a new chapter.

The WNBL recently hired Jennie Sager as the new Chief Executive Officer, and her appointment signals a promising future for the sport.

They also struck a broadcast deal with Whoopi Goldberg's All Women's Sports Network (AWSN) which should boost the global profile of the league.

Bringing a Visionary into the Fold

The Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate (WCGS) and the National Basketball League (NBL) recently announced Sager as the incoming CEO of the WNBL.

Having previously held roles at Nine Entertainment, Viacom/MTV, Twitter and Nextdoor, Sager’s broad skillset makes her an ideal fit for the position.

The media guru was a former college basketball player and is a passionate advocate for women's sports. She outlined plans to create opportunities for athletes and connect with the fans better.

“The WNBL represents the pinnacle of women’s basketball in Australia, and I am honoured to take on this role,” Sager said.

“Together, we will work to further the WNBL’s reputation as a premier destination for women’s basketball while driving greater representation and success for women in sport.”

Sager plans to strengthen community connections while supporting players better as professional athletes and driving digital innovation to expand the WNBL's reach locally and globally.

WNBL to Enjoy Global Recognition Through AWSN Partnership

The WNBL has also agreed a NEW partnership with 24/7 women's sports network AWSN.

The company was co-founded by American comedian and actress Goldberg and has secured broadcast rights to WNBL games in over 65 countries.

AWSN will broadcast every match live. There are also delayed streams and archived content for fans looking to catch the action online.

Countries such as the United States, India, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Mexico and Saudi Arabia will get their first taste of the WNBL action as the league exports its product to millions of people worldwide.

The WNBL has adopted a more proactive international strategy and has launched other partnerships with FIBA's YouTube channel and networks, such as W-Sport and Sport en France.

This exciting new collaboration also means more people can engage with the WNBL by betting on the outcomes of games throughout the season.

Collaboration is the Key for a Brighter Future

The appointment of Sager and renewed focus on international reach is aimed at establishing the WNBL as a leader in women's sports.

The WCGS is eager to boost the WNBL's profile and the recent developments could be a turning point for women's basketball in Australia.

Bringing Sager on board is an excellent decision, while the new broadcast deal will allow the WNBL to captivate audiences and generate a deeper appreciation for women's basketball.

These developments significantly boost the league’s profile and demonstrate that women's sports are getting more recognition across the world.

American WNBA star Caitlin Clark has drawn more eyes to women's basketball. She is a phenomenon, and her rivalry with Angel Reese will be a talking point for years.

Sager's leadership and the AWSN partnership will give talented WNBL players the spotlight they deserve at home and abroad, inspiring the younger generation to follow in Clark’s footsteps.
