Gritty Gems hold of French resistance- July 16, 2025In one of the most absorbing games of the group stage, Australia claimed a narrow 70–66 victory over France, securing a vital win and boosting their podium aspirations. Monique Bobongie (178-F-2006) led the Australian offence with 17 points, while Bonnie Deas (175-G-2006) sparked early momentum with key plays that set the tone for the encounter. France pushed back hard, with Nell Angloma (181-F-2006) posting 19 points and Sarah Cisse (187-C-2007) delivering a double-double (18 points, 16 rebounds). However, repeated missed layups and free throws ultimately hurt the French late as Australia was able to hold them at bay. Australia’s win places them at the top of Group D as they enter the Round of 16 taking on Argentina early Thursday morning at the Štarez Arena in Vodova, while France now faces a challenging path that may include an early clash with the USA.
