The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Southside Flyers in Dandenong on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by Canberra Capitals 80-71. The former international guard Jade Melbourne (178-2002, college: Arizona St.) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners and the former international forward Sara Blicavs (188-1993) chipped in 19 points and 9 rebounds. At the losing side the former international forward Isabelle Bourne (188-2000, college: Nebraska) responded with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Canberra Capitals is looking forward to face Townsville at home in the next round. Southside Flyers will play against Sydney and are hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
Very significant was Sydney's 85-77 road victory against Geelong U.. The former international forward Keely Froling (188-1996, college: SMU) nailed a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists (made all of her eight free throws) for the winning side and Lauren Nicholson accounted for 27 points. Sydney Flames' coach Guy Molloy allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American forward Mackenzie Holmes (190-2001, college: Indiana, agency: LBM Management) came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds for United in the defeat. Sydney will play against Perth on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Geelong U. will play against Adelaide and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Quite upsetting was Bendigo's home defeat in a game versus Townsville 74-66. Abbey Ellis fired a double-double by scoring 31 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Isobel Borlase produced 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Bendigo Spirit's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Townsville will meet Canberra on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Bendigo will have a break next round.
