WNBL Round 15 (Regular Season): Townsville beat Southside by three after a very close game

Fourth-ranked Southside Flyers (8-11) were very close to win a game against first ranked Townsville Fire (17-4) on Saturday. Townsville Fire managed to secure only three-point victory 78-75. However their fans expected easier game. Townsville forced 19 Southside turnovers. It was a good game for the former international guard Abbey Ellis (168-2001, college: Purdue) who led her team to a victory with 25 points. Forward Alicia Froling (190-1996, college: SMU) contributed with 14 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. International center Cayla George (193-1989) answered with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists for Southside. Townsville Fire have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 17-4 record. Southside at the other side keeps the fourth position with 11 games lost. Townsville are looking forward to face Canberra (#5) at home in the next round. Southside will play against Canberra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game for Bendigo Spirit (16-4) which hosted in Bendigo 4th placed Canberra Capitals (8-12). Second ranked Bendigo Spirit had an easy win 89-72. It was a great evening for international guard Isobel Borlase (180-2004) who led her team to a victory scoring 33 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Megan McConnell helped adding 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. The best for the losing side was the former international power forward Zitina Aokuso (193-1998) with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Bendigo Spirit. Defending champion maintains second place with 16-4 record behind leader Townsville. Canberra at the other side dropped to the fifth position with 12 games lost. Bendigo will play against Perth (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Canberra will play against Southside and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

It was an exceptional evening for Kelsey Griffin who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds. Zitina Aokuso came up with 22 points and 6 rebounds for Canberra in the defeat. Canberra Capitals' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. The victory was the third consecutive win for Bendigo Spirit. Defending champion maintains second place with 16-4 record behind leader Townsville. Loser Canberra Capitals dropped to the fifth position with 12 games lost. Bendigo will meet at home Perth (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Canberra will play against Southside and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 15: bottom-ranked Adelaide beat Geelong U. on the road 85-78. Sydney was destroyed by Perth on its own court 57-76. Southside unfortunately lost to Bendigo in a road game 88-98.

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when eighth ranked Adelaide Lightning (6-15) beat bottom-ranked United (5-15) in Geelong 85-78 on Saturday. Adelaide looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Sania Feagin (190-2003, college: S.Carolina) who led the winners and scored 28 points and 9 rebounds. The former international forward Steph Talbot (188-1994) accounted for 15 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists for the winning side. American forward Mackenzie Holmes (190-2001, college: Indiana, agency: LBM Management) came up with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international guard Jazmin Shelley (165-2000, college: Nebraska) added 21 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Geelong U. in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Adelaide moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Sydney. Newly promoted Geelong U. dropped to the bottom position with 15 games lost. Adelaide will meet higher ranked Southside (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Geelong U. will play against Sydney (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rather expected game when 6th ranked Sydney Flames (6-15) were smashed at home by third ranked Perth Lynx (15-5) 76-57 on Sunday. Perth had a 41-30 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for the former international forward Anneli Maley (185-1998, college: TCU) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds. American center Yemiyah Morris (193-1998, college: WVU) accounted for 12 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side. Four Perth Lynx players scored in double figures. Forward Shaneice Swain (185-2003) came up with 20 points and 7 rebounds and American forward Unique Thompson (190-1999, college: Auburn) added 13 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Sydney in the defeat. Sydney Flames' coach rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Perth maintains third place with 15-5 record having just three points less than leader Townsville. Sydney lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with 15 games lost. They share it with Adelaide. Perth will meet league's second-placed Bendigo on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sydney will play against Geelong U. Bendigo shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 53.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was an exceptional evening for international guard Isobel Borlase (180-2004) who led the winners and scored 42 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 6 assists (went 12 for 12 at the free throw line !!!).
