Big V Round 10 (Regular Season): #1 Gippsland Utd is defeated by Pakenham

The most crucial game of the last round was another loss of top-ranked Pacers (7-3) at the home court on Saturday night. Hosts were defeated by third ranked Warriors (7-4) 88-72. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. Pakenham dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Pacers's 26. Pakenham forced 19 Gippsland Utd turnovers. American forward Ryan Batte (198-1999, college: Thomas More, agency: Dominion Sports Group) scored 24 points, 7 assists and 5 steals to lead the charge for the winners and forward Atien Acuel (201-2001, agency: Crossover Management) chipped in 18 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. Warriors' coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American forward Bryce Brown (203, college: Lindsey Wilson, agency: Dominion Sports Group) responded with 20 points and 8 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws). Pakenham moved-up to second place, which they share with Sunbury. Gippsland Utd at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. Pakenham is looking forward to face Camberwell (#5) in Melbourne in the next round. Gippsland Utd will play at home against Hume City (#4) and is hoping to win this game.

Visiting Jets were defeated by Hume City Broncos in a tough game in Tullamarine 87-94. Forward Lachlan Wood (-2002) notched a double-double by scoring 16 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and Robbie Heath supported him with 28 points and 4 assists. Even 28 points and 5 rebounds by American guard Ishmael Sanders (188-1992, college: C-N) did not help to save the game for Sunbury. Jets' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Hume City moved-up to fourth place. Sunbury at the other side keeps the second position with four games lost. They share it with Pakenham. Hume City will play against league's leader Gippsland Utd in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Sunbury will play against Melbourne Uni and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Redbacks' coach tested eleven players and allowed the starting five to rest. Warrandyte have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain eighth position with 6-6 record. Loser Redbacks keeps the fifth place with five games lost. They share the position with McKinnon and Camberwell. Warrandyte will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. RMIT will play against Bellarine (#9) and hope to secure a win.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 10: Melbourne Uni lost to McKinnon on the opponent's court 78-91. Bellarine outscored Wyndham in a home game 97-77. RMIT managed to beat Camberwell on the road 91-75.



RMIT - Warrandyte 92-106

RMIT (#5) was upset in by eighth ranked Warrandyte 106-92. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Redbacks. Venom made 23-of-30 free shots (76.7 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Lanyc Shuler (185, college: West Liberty, agency: Dominion Sports Group) fired 33 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. Naturalized Croatian forward Ivan Platenik (201-1983, college: Alaska-Anch.) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Stephen Coffey produced a triple-double by scoring 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists and Malaysian forward Jin-Xi Yap (193-2005) added 23 points (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) respectively for lost side. Four Redbacks players scored in double figures. Redbacks' coach tested eleven players and allowed the starting five to rest. Warrandyte have a solid three-game winning streak.
