Everything went according to plan when second ranked Cairns Taipans (16-7) beat at home bottom-ranked Illawarra Hawks (2-21) 89-84 on Friday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Cairns Taipans made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Tahjere McCall (193-1994, college: Tennessee St.) who had a double-double by scoring 24 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. His fellow American import forward DJ Hogg (203-1996, college: Texas A&M) chipped in 15 points and 8 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Tyler Harvey (194-1993, college: EWU) who recorded 25 points and 5 assists and guard William Hickey (194-1999) added 16 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Five Cairns Taipans and four Illawarra Hawks players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Cairns Taipans. They maintain second place with 16-7 record behind leader Sydney. Illawarra Hawks lost their eleventh game in a row. They stay dead last with 21 lost games. Cairns Taipans will meet at home JackJumpers (#4) in the next round. Illawarra Hawks will play against Bullets (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
