Date: April 23, 2023
No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Cougars (4-3) crushed 8th ranked Vikings (2-5) in Melbourne 120-73 on Sunday. Cougars made 27-of-34 free shots (79.4 percent) during the game, while Vikings only scored eight points from the stripe. Cougars forced 20 Vikings turnovers and outrebounded them 56-42 including 21 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 15 passes made by Vikings' players. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Gerrard Newby (196-1995, college: Union, KY) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. His fellow American import point guard Anthony Williams (178-1995, college: Clark Atlanta) accounted for 21 points, 7 assists and 4 steals for the winning side. Williams is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Four Cougars players scored in double figures. American guard Ray Mitchell (201-1989, college: CS Stanislaus) came up with 18 points and 5 rebounds and center Roberto Lamorticella (198, college: Siskiyous JC) added 11 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Vikings in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cougars moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Vikings keep the eighth position with five games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
