Date: May 20, 2023
No shocking result in a game in Bunbury where tenth ranked Lightning (4-8) smashed bottom-ranked Slammers (0-9) 94-50 on Saturday. Lightning held Slammers to an opponent 25.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 42.9 percent accuracy of the winners. Lightning forced 25 Slammers turnovers and outrebounded them 54-40 including 17 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Slammers' players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Lightning made 8 blocks. American forward Laci Hawthorne (183-1999, college: Utah St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 15 rebounds for the winners and guard Caitlyn Jones (175-2001, college: Idaho) chipped in 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. At the losing side guard Paris Duffield (171) responded with 15 points and 6 rebounds and Javene Fitch scored 4 points and 9 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Lightning moved-up to ninth place. Slammers lost their ninth game in a row. They still close the standings with nine games lost. Lightning will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Slammers will play against Magic (#5) in Mandurah and hope to get finally their first victory.
