There was no surprise in Mount Waverley where 11th ranked Falcons (4-6) were defeated by eighth ranked Hawks (9-4) 74-65 on Sunday. Strangely Falcons outrebounded Hawks 44-31 including 29 on the defensive glass. Guard Marena Whittle (180-94, college: NDSU, agency: LBM Management) stepped up and scored 24 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and naturalized Turkish guard Funda Nakkasoglu (173-95, college: Florida) chipped in 21 points. Forward Renae Mokrzycki (183-94, college: Idaho) responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds and forward Kelly Bowen (182-89, college: Gonzaga) scored 14 points and 9 rebounds. Hawks moved-up to sixth place in League. Loser Falcons keep the eleventh position with six games lost. Hawks will meet at home Diamond Valley Eagles (#17) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Falcons will play against Rangers (#15) in Dandenong and hope to secure a win.
