The Australian Junior National Team got to a victorious start of the Oceania U19 Championship in Adelaide. They defeated their New Zealand counterparts in the first game of the best-of-three series. The teams are fighting for the ticket to the U19 World Championship in Thailand next year. The Gems made the first step towards the aim today. The Gems got to a quck start as they built a 9:3 lead early in the game. The Junior Tall Ferns stayed behind and trailed 14:7 after the starting frame. The Gems raised the tempo in the second stanza and easily held their opponents at bay. The Aussies rolled to a 34:19 lead at halftime. The Kiwis struggled to find their rhythm and were outmuscled in the third period. The Gems outscored the visitors 15:10 to enter the fourth period ahead by 20 points. The Kiwis never rebounded in the fourth stanza and had to surrender at the end. Elizabeth Cambage delivered 14 points and 11 boards for the Gems. Tess Magden nailed 13 points, while Stephanie Cumming had 11 for the winners. Erin Rooney paced the Junior Tall Ferns with 12 points. Jelena Vucinic provided 8 points in a losing effort. The hosts outrebounded the Kiwis 49:33 and held them to only 22% from the field. Australia sank 44% of field goals. The teams will meet again on Saturday.

The Australian Junior National Team overcame New Zealand opponents in the second game of the best-of-three U19 Oceania Championship series in Adelaide. The victory meant the Gems qualified for the U19 World Championship to be held in Thailand next year. The Aussies won the opening games of their series against the Junior Tall Ferns to guarantee the win in the series. The teams will meet again in the third encounter later tonight. The Junior Tall Ferns capitalized on numerous misses from the hosts in the starting stanza and built a 17:13 lead going into the second period. The Junior Tall Ferns continued to impose tight defense and pressure on the hosts but Australia gradually came back to life. They outscored their opponents 17:13 in the second frame and tied it all at 30 at halftime. The breakthrough for the home team came in the third period. Paced by Elisabeth Cambage the Gems tallied a 28:8 rally to pile up a comfortable advantage at three-quarter time. New Zealand had little to answer with and failed to recover in the final stanza. The Gems drove to a confident victory and booked their World championship ticket. Elizabeth Cambage poured in 19 points to lead all scorers. She also added game-high 11 boards to her tally. Stephanie Cumming dropped 12 points, while Kate Gaze (172-G-90) had 10 points in a winning case. Erin Rooney answered with 14 points for New Zealand. Zoe Kensington provided 9 points in defeat.
