Ranking the South Pacific Teams - Men's- January 29, 2005The majority of the basketball community knows of the achievements of the larger basketball nations in Oceania, Australia and New Zealand. But how would the likes of smaller basketball nations in the South Pacific rank among themselves. This article will rank the top 10 South Pacific basketball teams, excluding the likes of Australia and New Zealand. It takes into consideration the inclusion of players that might be eligible to play for their country, recent results and development of players 1.Fiji Key NT players: Mekeli Wesley, Peni Nasalo, Alex Cox, Sam Singh and Marques Whippy
Fiji possess good basketball players at all positions, something is regarded as a rarity in the South Pacific. They have upgraded at all positions. They have a star player in the name of Mekeli Wesley to build their future, players with experience in US colleges and abroad; and height to dominate the region. Another advantage is the youth of the team, with many important players under the age of 22. They would need overseas coaching if they are to challenge the likes of New Zealand and Australia 2.New Caledonia Key NT Players: Michael Gely, Bertnard Gely, Benoit Weber, Emmanuel Soeria Ovamba and Stephane Samaridan, The defending South Pacific Games Champion already had a strong frontcourt with the inclusion of former NT member Bertnard Gely and his seven-foot brother Michael can cause a huge advantage to New Caledonia. But they lack a lot of depth in the backcourt, although they have some nice talent coming around. The unknown factor is that there might be many more New Caledonians playing basketball in France and their inclusion in the National Team could change a lot of things around
