National women's basketball coach Michael Whippy will name his final team for the Beijing Olympic qualifying tournament in Spain next week. Whippy is in the United States to attend his daughter Mikaelar's graduation at Long Island University this week. Whippy is expected to join the national team in their preparation for the qualifying tournament next week. Basketball Fiji secretary Fanny Simpson said Whippy would name the 12 players when he returns from USA.
'We will have training for the players in the squad and their performance will be monitored. 'The five overseas based players Valerie Nainima (165-G-86), Mikaelar Whippy (173-G-86), Helen Rodan, Letava Whippy (Aust) and Bulou Tuisue (NZ) will join the squad next week. 'We are impressed with the performance of the local players in training,' said Simpson. 'They have the ability of playing at International level and most of them will be considered for the qualifying tournament.'
The National side has been pooled with host Spain and Brazil for the tournament that will start next month. The pool winner will earn a spot in the Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing, China in August.
