Saints (men) and Sparks (women) team successfully defended their titles during the 2014 Easter Basketball Championships yesterday. Sparks defeated the young Neptune Dynamic Reds side 27-20 while Saints beat Boston White 41-31. Sparks Lynn Koyamainavure said their aim was to defend their title despite a tough challenge from the Reds. We acknowledge Neptune Dynamic Reds for their effort, she said. They really gave us a good run but our aim was to defend our title.
Neptune Dynamic Reds had a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. The side includes national reps Kelera Koyamainavure, Donnis Kainamoli and Tiyana Kainamoli who was the point guard and played a good game too. Sparks had former national rep Mereleni Tora, captain Lynn and point guard Ada Dansey maintained pressure and using their experience well to counter the Reds.
The women in purple outfit walloped Lady Bird 41-16 in the first semifinal while Neptune Dynamic Reds defeated Siene-On 38-23 to book their berth in the final. It was a tough game and our plan in the last quarter was to minimize errors, Lynn said. Meanwhile, Tiyana Kainamoli said things did not work out well for them. Sparks have more experience but I believe we should have done better, she said. Our plan was to outrun them and stern on our defence but it failed.
