THE Fiji Basketball Federation has begun its preparations for the Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers in 2017 ensuring a commitment to their All Stars program. FBF assistant development officer Saula Koroi said they had initiated their All Stars Program designed to groom selected players for national representation. "We started with a workshop for all the Eastern based players and will do the same for west based players next week. We will also begin with our camps for all selected players," he said. About 72 players had been selected for the program after the National Secondary School Basketball tournament held in the second week of term two holidays at the Vodafone Arena. Twenty four players both male and female were recruited for the U15, U17 and U19 grades. Koroi said it would be here that they selected their player base for upcoming international tournaments. "The reason we've taken this step is because previously a lot of the times a national team is selected, a lot of time is spent on teaching them the basics and we want to eliminate that," he said. Plans have also been set in motion for youth coaches to be a part of the initiative as a directive from the world governing body. "There are a few youths who have shown interest and have taken the necessary steps to get accredited but the final decision lies with the board," he said.
