Basketball Fiji happy with development plans- May 24, 2016BASKETBALL Fiji has recorded a growing interest from children in the sport. BF administrator and Hoops for Health coach Leah Seru told the International Basketball Federation that a surge in participants had been through the success of their development plans. Seru said the Hoops for Health which was designed to use the sport as a medium of combating the risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) had been a catalyst to the increasing number of participants. "When our Hoops for Health coaches go to schools, they no longer have to bring equipment with them and they are greeted by the sight of kids playing basketball," Seru said. "Then when we leave, the kids keep practising their new skills and no longer have to wait for us to return. It's a great feeling." She added that availability of proper game facilities and training gear had been a key factor towards the growth of the sport. BF's recently received playing shoes sent to Fiji by the Fordham University Women's Basketball team in New York, USA which were distributed to those in the western and Northern Divisions. "They have also upgraded existing facilities around the country. New rims and backboards had been installed in Nadi and Nasinu. "The Nasinu backboard is reversible to allow both basketball and netball to be played on the Valelevu Multi-Purpose Courts. |
