BASKETBALL Fiji is targeting 30 Suva schools for the Hoops for Health program. Program co-ordinator and Basketball Fiji development officer Saula Koroi said nine schools had been visited in the Capital City as of last year. "The response was good. The principals' response was good. The students enjoy the sessions," he said. "We're not going there to only teach basketball." The Hoops for Health program aims to educate school students about healthy living and eating through basketball. It is funded by the Australian Government. Koroi said Basketball Fiji was planning to use the program in staging a national primary schools basketball championship. "The main idea will be healthy eating and living." He said plans were also there to extend the program to other towns and cities such as Nadi and Lautoka. "We're trying to extend it to Nadi and Lautoka. We visited three schools in Nadi and were disrupted by the cyclone. "We're targeting more than 10 schools in Lautoka and Nadi. We'll resume once the schools are functional," Koroi said. Basketball Fiji's marketing and communications officer Stephen Bourke said Hoops for Health was a regional program. "Fiji is leading the way. We are running the program better than other countries. We have six volunteer coaches who visit schools," he said.
