Royal were crowned the women's winners of the Nadi Basketball Association Summer League finals at the Fiji Airport hard court in Namaka, Nadi, on Saturday. In a tough clash Royal edged Lady Jets 22-20 in the final. Tournament co-ordinator, Jone Ravitu said both teams have set a standard for other basketball teams to follow. 'If we didn't make the minimum of four women's teams regardless of the men's teams, we were not going to run the season,' he said. 'We managed to get four teams from Nadi and we reached out to our folks in Lautoka to see if they were interested. 'They managed to get a women's team as well. So now we have five women's teams.' Furthermore, Ravitu said, women's participation has brought a different dynamic to the association. 'Women have certain strengths that are very unique in them that has boosted the running of our association,' he said. 'We would not have progressed if we didn't have any women participation. 'The women's contribution has ensured that we have run this season at a very professional standard. Their contribution is really valued.'
