Spartans, Hotshots Win Basketball Tourney

Nadi Spartans and the Hotshots (Lautoka) took out the men's and women's titles during the Easter Basketball Championship. Held in Namaka, Nadi, the event was organized by Nadi Basketball Association and sponsored by Digicel Fiji. Both teams won $400 each. The Howard Henry- captained Spartans edged Stripling Warriors (Suva) 21-20 in the men's final. Spartans had the services of Dwayne Dean and Dallas Ram while Stripling Warriors had the services of Mosese Maiwiriwiri, Manoa Vuetibau, Digitsaki Kaci, Ilaitia Rainima, and Timoci Kean. In the semifinal, Spartans beat Rolling Loud (Suva) while Stripling Warriors beat Falcons 21-10. Team Hotshots, the darling of the Sugar City defeated Suva Saints 16-12 in the women category final. Association's president Jone Ravitu thanked all the eight men's teams and six women teams that competed in the two-day event. 'We hope to host the event bigger and better next year in Nadi,' he said. Club competitions continue this Saturday. 'We are into our sixth round and we had to stop because of the rain. The challenge is that we don't have an indoor facility in the Nadi,' he said. Upon the completion of the sixth and the seventh round, the championships will host their quarterfinal for the men and semi-final for the women. Meanwhile, on the points' standings, Spartans lead after six wins ahead of Falcons. Lautoka's Hotshots leads the women's category followed by Royals of Nadi. The weekly games resume at 8.30am.
