Wins for Royals and Cougars

After losing three straight games, the Notre Dame Royals on Friday beat the St. John's Knights 38-29 in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Girls Basketball League to get back on the right track. Tied 20-20 at the half, then only up 28-27 after the third quarter, it was a last-minute momentum push in the final quarter that gave the Royals the victory. An aggressive defense was key, holding the Knights to only two points, while the Royals scored 10. Cedera Aguilar was the leading scorer for the Royals with 15 points. Freshman Monica Giger led the Knights with 13 points.
In other Friday hoops action, the Academy Cougars beat the Tiyan Titans 58-37. The Cougars improved to 5-2 in the league, while the Titans fell to 1-6. The teams were tied after the first quarter at 8-8, but the Cougars stormed ahead and took a 27-19 lead at the half. The Cougars were up 44-26 after the third quarter and finished off the game to win 58-37. The Cougars were led by Aubriaunne Esplana's 12 points, while Camy Hattori added 10.
