The Sanchez Sharks kept up their winning ways in the GTA Holiday TipOFF annual basketball tournament at the Tamuning gym, moving their record to 4-1 and tightening their hold on second place in the Men's Varsity Division. The games late Friday night will determine final standings. The 9 p.m. game between the undefeated Falcons and the third-place Tamuning Typhoons will firm up the rankings for the playoffs, which start on Saturday afternoon. Only six teams each in two divisions - Men's Varsity and Coed Recreational - can play in this rugged 12-day tournament, now in its fifth year. 'The whole thing about this tournament is that the champions are determined by stamina and conditioning,' said tournament organizer Elsa Ulloa, whose group runs much of the organized basketball at the Tamuning gym. 'It's a popular tournament for people looking to stay in shape during the holidays, when many other people are piling on the calories.' Winless AM Insurance and MicroFriends, both at 0-4, were also scheduled to battle last night to see who would get their first win.
On Thursday, the Sharks relied on a balanced scoring attack led by Reggie Rechebong, who scored 13 points, while Branz Ngiratebl scored 10 and and Jeff Manalastas, Jay Casimiro and Jason Murphy scored nine points apiece. The Sharks had a 35-31 lead at the half and kept the Typhoons at bay despite Gino Soulik's second-half effort. Soulik scored 10 of his 14 points for the Typhoons in the second half. Derrick Royster led the Typhoons with 16 points, half of them coming from the free throw line. Edgardo Baza chipped in 11 points for the Typhoons, the defending champions for the Men's Varsity Division. The Falcons will have to rely on their workhorses - Jorge Piola, Jon Kanemoto, Earvin Jose and Daren Hechanova - to maintain their undefeated record. They'll take their talents against the Typhoons, who will have Rodrigue Ebondo on the roster. Ebondo, who arrived on Guam Friday morning, plays in the Philippine Basketball Association's D-League, said Ulloa, and was an MVP.
In the Coed Recreation Division, The Blazers, Diversity and Typhoons all have one loss each while ASC Trust and the Falcons were tied at 2-3 going into last night's games. Team Southwest was winless at 0-5. The Blazers, last year's runner-up, has already locked up the top seed in the Coed Division. The Holiday Tipoff takes a break for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and games run each day afterward until Championship day on Dec. 30.
