Team Guam beat Malaysia 101-78 Saturday in Thailand, leaving the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Eastern Division Pre-Qualifier with a perfect 6-0 record. Team Guam, invited as an unranked squad to its first FIBA Asia event ever, shot from tied for No. 160 to No. 97 after four games. "I'm so proud of how this team came together and represented Guam," said head coach Edward Calvo . "We had already accomplished our goal of qualifying...and today we put Asia on notice that Team Guam is coming." Guam is now one of 24 teams that will battle each other in six pools in the Asia Cup 2021 Qualifier. Only the top four teams from this pool play in the actual Asia Cup 2021. Team Guam sauntered out of the arena with the swagger of champions. Some posted up solo to juice their feeds and text loved ones; others gathered in small groups for lively chatter. By then, Edward Calvo was done waving goodbye through a taxi window. In typical fashion, he takes care of business and quickly moves on. We ask what's next, and he's already got the bullet points: "Back to work on our youth program, organizing more local clinics and tournaments, and player training for The Pacific Games," he said. And the $64,000 question - what's next for this team? This reply takes longer: "This team must get better before we play the top teams in Asia, and we will," he said. "Key returnees - Joe Blas, Kyle Husslein, Mike Sakazaki, Ben Borja and Jonathan Galloway - were not available for this one, so we expect the roster to change in 2019. We can still get so much better." Longtime Team Guam player Jine Han was also on this trip as assistant coach. He was as excited as his former teammates as the clock wound down. "I had lots of mixed emotions. Feeling of accomplishment, first of all; knowing we made history," said Han. "I also feel very blessed for this amazing experience."
