Led by the great Soana Lucet (187-C-87), New Caledonia powered its way to the Bronze medal in the FIBA Oceania Youth Tournament. The team wasn't just a one-women team and all the girls played at a great level during the week. The team goal was to do a better tournament than they did two years ago in Australia (6th place).

But everybody the road wouldn't be easy against teams like Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti. The team featured some experienced players like Soana Lucet, Marie-rose Ofatuku and Catherine Poithily, who were already in the roster in Australia in 2004.
Soana Lucet was great during the entire tournament and led the team to the Bronze, the caledonians defeated Fiji twice and also Tahiti before claiming the Bronze medal. Australia was simply too good for New Caledonia, Lucet couldn't do everything on her own, but the team wasn't very far from being able to defeat New Zealand. NZ assistant-coach Tracy Carpenter was impressed by the progress made by the team since she visited New Caledonia in 1998.
"I worked with an older team back then and this one here was better than them [...]but they have potential for a medal."
Soana Lucet should have earn consideration from pro teams in New Zealand or in Australia after such a great tournament and this might be the right time for her to leave her homeland. She doesn't have anything to prove at the Oceania level. The supporting cast was less talented but players like Wasseline Luepak, Myriam Fenuafanote, Marie-rose Ofatuku, Clarissa Passa, Raissa Tabar and Yolaine Koteureu could be add the to National Team for the 2007 South Pacific Games in Saoma. In these games, New Caledonia will be looking to confirm its position as the best Pacific country.
