Stars Crowned Champions - Jul
10, 2005
After an exhausting season filled
with suprises, the Auckland Stars showed their winning class to go
record back to back championships after an intense final at the
Pettigrew Green Arena. The competition's best road team, stole the soap
opera eventually after a series of late game mishaps.
Lindsay Tait seemed to have put the Stars in good position, three points
up with 33.4 seconds left. However after an exchange of free throws
between teams, Dusty Rychart who had hit a clutch trey two weeks ago,
launched, missing but Paora Winitana tipping it in. Controversially, the
clock was allowed to run out with the Stars beginning to celebrate their
victory but with Hawks protesting their should be time left to play and
a scuffle broke out at halfway.
With ordered restored and time back on the clock, the Hawks fouled
Lindsay Tait before the ball could be inbounded. Tait missed both
freethrows - the second deliberately. The rebound was then batted to
halfway, where Paora added one more piece of drama to the game, hitting
a turn around, fade away hook shot - which was disallowed as it was half
a second too late! Dillon Boucher (196-G-75) led the Stars from the front, earning the
Finals MVP title after his amazing defensive work ethic and persistence
on offence. Boucher now has a record eight national league titles. "It's an individual milestone, but it has been a team effort to get
me where I am. Every team I've ever won with has been a great team with
great players." said Boucher.
Australian big man Derek Moore was the spark for the home team, with his
monster-like blocking and rebounding abilities but also with his soft
touch and guile on the perimeter. Moore led all scorers with 22 points. Auckland Stars 69 (Frank 18, Tait & Olson 12) Hawkes Bay Hawks 68 (Moore 22, Rychart 16, Majstrovich 14)
