Waikato sweep Wellington in the Finals
Wellington - Waikato 79:84

The first home loss in the season turned too painful for the Wellington Saints. They were overwhelmed by the Waikato Pistons at the TSB Bank Arena tonight and lost the NBL Finals battle. The Waikato Pistons claimed the 2008 NBL championship title. It became the third championship crown in the franchise history. Pero Cameron (199-F-74, agency: Duran International) masterminded the win sinking 20 points as he grabbed his 8th career NBL title. Puke Lenden (195-G-80) came up with 15 points and 8 boards to be named the Finals MVP. The Pistons jumped to a better start as they held to a 10:4 lead. But the hosts answered with 8 straight points and then drove to an 18:16 lead after the first frame. Jason Crowe picked up his third foul early in the second quarter but it never slowed down the Pistons. They capitalized on a woeful shooting accuracy from the home side and limited Wellington to just 12 points in the stanza. Waikato claimed a 40:30 advantage at halftime. But the Saints readjusted their game after the long break coming off the dressing room ready to fight. They opened the second half with a 14:7 run to spur ahead. Wellington drained 6 triples during the quarter and accounted for 29 third-frame points. It was just enough for them to lead 59:56 heading into the fourth period. Waikato exploded with a bunch of treys early in the final quarter and stepped in front 65:62. Lindsay Tait dragged the home team within 2 points later on but the Pistons were unstoppable. They nailed 6 straight points for an 8-point buffer with just over 4 minutes remaining. Brian Wethers (194-F/G-80, college: California) and Puke Lenden hit some key baskets down the stretch and Waikato ensured the title. Brian Wethers finished with 16 points, while Jason Crowe had 13 points and 6 assists in a win. Brendon Polyblank (197-G/F-78, college: Texas St.-San Marcos) and Nick Horvath (208-F/C-81, college: Duke) scored 19 points apiece for the Saints. Luke Martin (181-G-81, college: UTEP) dropped 13 points in defeat.

Wellington: Brendon Polyblank 19, Nick Horvath 19, Luke Martin 13
Waikato: Pero Cameron 20, Brian Wethers 16, Puke Lenden 15

   Jason Crowe named NBL MVP
The Waikato Pistons point guard Jason Crowe (193-G-76, college: Cal.St. Northridge) was trumped the NBL Most Valuable Player. The NBL had little doubts about delivering its MVP award to Crowe. He had an outstanding season with the Pistons. American point guard led Waikato to the second overall spot in the regular season and continued to deliver in the playoffs. Waikato stand one win away from the title at the moment. Crowe posted three triple-doubles in the season and finished atop of the Player Power Rankings. He also was honoured the Player of the Week for five times. The 31-year-old guard surpassed his teammate Brian Wethers (194-F/G-80, college: California), Aucklands Casey Frank (203-F-77, college: N.Arizona) and Wellingtons Ernest Scott (200-F-82, agency: Elfus-Siegel Management (ESM), college: Valdosta St.) for the award. Jason Crowe averaged 21.7 points, 8.3 assists, 7.2 boards and 1.3 steals per game in the season.
Jason Crowe also got into the All-Star Five selection. He was accompanied by Casey Frank, Brian Wethers, Ernest Scott and Nick Horvath (208-F/C-81, college: Duke). Casey Frank added a Kiwi MVP to his Outstanding Forward and Outstanding Kiwi Forward nominations. He averaged 21.6 points and 8.5 boards per game in the season. Brian Wethers won the scoring title for the season. He registered 27.6 points per appearance and masterminded the successful year for the Waikato Pistons. Ernest Scott played a key role in the Wellington Saints claiming the regular season title. He came up with 21.3 points and 6.7 boards per game. Nick Horvath provided sufficient help for Scott in the Saints brilliance. Kiwi center averaged 17.5 points, 9.2 boards and 1.9 blocks.
