Otago secure National Womens title - Aug 8, 2011

Otago Oceana Goldrush won the 2011 Womens National Basketball Championships, defeating Nelson Sparks 72-57 in the final held in Dunedin.
Otago comfortable disposed of defending champions Harbour Breeze 82-63 in one semi final while the Sparks overcame the Hutt Valley Flyers in the other semi final.

Otago took a big lead in the early stages of the final, Casey Lockwood (183-F-85) contributing 9 points as the Goldrush raced to a 27-17 first quarter advantage. Defences tightened in the second period, Otago shading the period 9-8 to lead 38-25 at half time. The Sparks threw everything at the hosts in the third quarter, Kat Jones scoring 8 of Nelsons 20 points in the period, the lead being reduced to 6 points (51-45) with ten minutes remaining.
The lead was still in single digits with 5:18 remaining but back to back baskets by Suzie |Bates and Soraya Maga-Jensen subdued the Nelson challenge and Otago were able to control proceedings in the closing minutes to secure a 72-57 win and with it the National title.

Oceana Goldrush win 2011 WBC Palmerston North tournament - Jun 28, 2011

Oceana Goldrush claimed 2011 WBC Palmerson North tournament title. The tournament served as the first round of 2011 WBC season. The point from this tournament will be carried into the second tournament. WBC Round 2 will be held in North Harbour from July 7-9. The top five teams on accumulated points from both tournaments will advance into Plate Section tournament in Dunedin.
Oceana Goldrush overcame NZ Force Womens Academy 71:54 in the Final. Casey Lockwood (183-F-85) stepped up with 19 points to pace the effort. Daneka Wipiiti added 14 points for the winners. The Goldrush earned 20 points for winning the tournament. NZ Force answered with 20 points from Dionne Martin. Penina Davidson finished with 16 points in the loss. Hutt Valley Flyers occupied the third position. They prevailed against Wakato Wizards 71:38 in consolation final. Fairen Williams came up with 16 points to pace Hutt Valley. Jasmine Davis and Molly McCallum netted 11 points each for the winners. The Wizards answered with 14 points from Rhaiah Spooner-Knight.
Harbour Breeze clinched the fifth place as they outscored Nelson Sparks 63:57. Southland Pearls finished seventh after a 52:45 win over Taranaki Trojans. Finally Palmerston North held off Canterbury Wildcats 46:41 to earn the ninth position.
