Lisa Scott (171-G-87) hit a free throw with nine seconds remaining to lift Hutt Valley-Porirua Flyers to the 2013 Womens Basketball Championship crown, beating Waikato Wizards 59-58 in the final.
Waikato (7-1) had entered the finals weekend at Porirua as top seeds, despite losing their previous encounter with the home team in preliminary rounds.
But the Flyers jumped out to an early lead in the title game and enjoyed a 36-22 advantage at halftime.
The Wizards came back strong after the restart, closing to within six points midway through the third period and eventually producing 10 unanswered points to get their noses in front late in the fourth.
Scott put her side back on top with one of two from the free-throw line, but Waikato forward Kalani Purcell had a chance to steal the win back in similar fashion with three seconds on the clock.
Purcell had an outstanding game, leading the Wiz with 17 points/15 rebounds/eight steals, but could not find her target with either free throw in the clutch.
Hutt Valleys Margaret Scott (176-G-90) led all scorers with 18 points/11 rebounds, while Stella Beck (177-F-95) also had 16 points for the Flyers.
