Kahn Hart of australiabasket.com sat down with Kennedy Hamilton-Kereama who is the Technical Assistant for the New Zealand Women's national team the Tall Ferns, to discuss the national teams' season so far and the upcoming Olympic Tournament. The Tall ferns who are captained by Anneka Kerr (183-F-81), will be in a tough pool which includes defending gold medallists the USA and hosts China as well as African champions Mali and European powers Spain and the Czech Republic. Kennedy is one of New Zealand's best up and coming coaches and is also assistant coach of the Christchurch Sirens who compete in the tough Australian Women's National Basketball League.

Hi Kennedy, what are your roles for the Christchurch Sirens and New Zealand women's national team the Tall Ferns?

I suppose I play numerous roles with both teams - With the National team I am the Technical Assistant, so I spend a lot of time breaking down, coding, and scouting game tape I also play a small coaching role and Assist both Mike McHugh and Leigh Gooding either at training and some games, obviously at the Olympics there are television rights so I won't be watching the game from the nose bleeds with my trusty laptop and video camera - I will be on the bench in a Assistant role which is going to be the greatest experience of my life so far. On the other side of the coin I am the Assistant Coach with Leigh Gooding for the WNBL Christchurch Sirens and my role with that team can be anything from, Scouting, Taking individual sessions, shoot arounds, Team trainings, Assisting Leigh in games and also taking team video sessions (Pre and Post game).

How do you think the Tall Ferns season has gone thus far?

With Beijing lurking ever more closely, the team has experienced some fantastic highs and some real lows. Our preparation has been very beneficial in terms of the international experience that we have gained collectively, and individually. Our past six months has been flight after flight going to many places from Beijing, Ningbo (China), Valencia, Madrid (SPAIN), Prague, Brno (CZECH REPUBLIC) and playing against international teams from China, Korea, Angola, Spain, Australia, Cuba, USA, and Czech Republic with superstars like Lisa Leslie (196-C-72, college: USC) (USA), Amaya Valdemoro (184-F-76) (Spain), Hana Machova (182-F/G-79) (Czech) and Nan Chen (197-C-83) (China) so I think that anytime you get the opportunity to play against that sort of caliber it makes for a GREAT season/Campaign.

What are some of the Tall Fern's goals for the Beijing Olympics?

One of the Tall Ferns goals is to make the top 8, we have targeted one of our games as a must win and have targeted a couple of teams as possible wins (as long we play to our<

DAISHON KNIGHT American Guard Daishon Knight (185-G-91) had an amazing evening in the last round for Manawatu J., receiving a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 11. The 27-year old player had a double-double of 45 points and 13 rebounds, while his team edged out Southland S. (#3, 11-4) 94-91. Manawatu J. is placed at 7th position in New Zealand NBL. Too late to salvage the team, which is currently ranked such low. They already lost 13 games and recorded just three victo...   [read more]

NBL Round 11: Jets defeat Sharks in the closest game of the week - 4 days ago
There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in NBL. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. The most exciting game of round 11 in the NBL took place in Palmerston North. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Sharks (11-4) to eighth ranked Jets (3-13) 94-91 on Sunday evening. It was quite big e...   [read more]
