While the results carried barely any weight, Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning was still pleased to come away from the National Basketball League's preseason Blitz tournament in Porirua with a trio of wins to their name.

In what was their first and only competitive hit-outs of the preseason, the Giants upstaged early competition favourites the Wellington Saints 99-79 and hit triple figures in their 109-79 win over the Canterbury Rams.

The Giants also beat a Porirua invitational team 102-80 after they stepped in to replace the Super City Rangers.

Imports Ben Strong and Raymond Cowels III (193-F/G-90, college: Santa Clara, agency: Court Side) made their first appearances in a Giants singlet and Fanning said they both made solid contributions.

The Rams won two of their three games at the blitz but were missing US point guard Jamie Adams with a minor foot injury and new signing Marcel Jones, who had only just touched down in the country.

They beat an undermanned Wellington Saints' side 91-82 on Saturday, but were then thumped 109-79 against the Nelson Giants on Sunday morning.

Canterbury also overcame Porirua 79-59.

Wellington's three losses were meaningless in the context of missing stars Tai Wesley, Shea Ili and Torrey Craig for the tournament.

They were defeated heavily 99-79 to the Nelson Giants, while the Canterbury Rams beat them 91-82. They were also defeated by Porirua Toa in a shock 81-80 loss on Friday night.

Saints coach Kevin Braswell had to start at point guard with his side so depleted and said it was clear his players needed to work on their fitness.
