New Zealand victoriously opened 2012 Pacific Youth Championships. They knocked down Papua New Guinea in the opener. Hanna Tusa delivered 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Kiwis.
New Zealand led from start to finish. They accumulated a 15:6 lead after the opening quarter. The Emerging Junior Tall Ferns boosted the margin to 28 points at halftime. New Zealand limited their opponents at 9 points in the second half and raced to a comfortable win at the end. Caroline Hardeman netted 14 points for the winners. Marrina Boino answered with 6 points for Papua New Guinea. Renagi Fred chipped in 5 points and pulled down 9 boards in defeat.
