St Joseph's students learn basketball tips- May 10, 2018THE International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Oceania took St Joseph's International Catholic College students through some lessons yesterday. Fiba Oceania 'Basketball for Good' managers Catherine Grawich and Peter Topp were assisted by newly appointed Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea executive officer Stephan Damien and national player Apia Muri. The students underwent basketball drills and picked up tips. Grawich said the programme was designed to promote the 3x3 basketball format in the community. 'This programme comes under Fiba's 'Basketball for Good' initiative so we try to use basketball as a tool for community engagement,' Grawich said. 'We like to promote healthy lifestyles in schools, and Papua New Guinea is doing really well in engaging programmes in the communities for schools, children and women. 'We are going to introduce the 3x3 format to schools in Port Moresby and before branching out to other provinces. 'What makes the format so good is that you only need one ring and it's a ten-minute game. 'The format will be used at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. 'I think PNG can really be competitive in the format, so we're looking forward to see it expand in the country.' |
