Hoops For Health returns in Port Moresby- June 11, 2020
Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) has resumed their basketball activities in Port Moresby with a Hoops For Health program at Don Bosco Technical Institute. The Federation returned to the courts with a 2-day Hoops For Health clinic. "We were approached by our good friend Terrence Tuohik in bringing over our program to the school and we happily obliged to run our first program since the lockdown was lifted," shared BFPNG Development Officer, Jordan Sere. Tuohik, a teacher in Don Bosco and a long time supporter of the Federation breached the idea to help introduce basketball to more students at the school. "I love basketball and have always tried to support them in any way I can, and the Hoops For Health is a great introductory program to new enthusiasts of the sport," said Tuohik, who volunteered as the logistical transport officer in the 2018 FIBA Oceania Championship. "It was good for us to have basketball back again, and we are very happy in partnering with the Federation to help us develop the sport in our school," he added. The particular program held at the school centered on introducing the rules and free play games of both basketball and 3x3 while delivering health messaging that focuses on hydration and a healthy diet. "We are very happy with the reception of the participants because of the smiles on their faces and to see the fun that they were having on the court," Sere said. BFPNG Chief Operating Officer, Nick Daroa was also present during the activities and mentioned that they are planning to conduct follow-up programs for the schools in the following weeks. "Even before the program ended, some of the participants are already clamoring for us to come back. We only planned for these two days but we promise to be back in the coming weeks and organize more programs for the students," shared Daroa. "The sport has provided a positive relief in these trying times and we appreciate the support of our partners and friends in bringing the game to everyone," he added. The Hoops for Health program under the Basketball For Good strategy of BFPNG is supported by the Australian Government through the Pacific Sports Partnerships, and FIBA's Foundation, the International Basketball Foundation. |
